I've found that getting on in years, rather than more radios, I've grown accustomed to less radios, not because my interest in the hobby has waned, it's just that there is so much to listen to, I've had to become disciplined in my monitoring activities. Especially here in the heart of New York City.

In my heyday, I had perhaps 5 or 6 receivers going at once--- some were scanners and others where dedicated to single channel monitoring. Most were VHF/UHF, but there were also a number of receivers on the shortwave bands, monitoring mostly military aeronautical stuff.

I'm not familiar with Firebuff66's location and his "monitoring environment"--- sometimes you need a lot of monitoring capability because traffic is so scarce and so sparse that you don't want to miss anything. In areas of higher-density communications, you can probably get by with a bit less.

Here in NYC, I generally just monitor one of the citywide NYPD channels and the citywide FDNY frequency. If an incident occurs, I can quickly switch to a more appropriate frequency. But I certainly give Firebuff66 a tip of the hat for such a neat (literally and figuratively) setup, and kudos for being a feed provider here on RadioReference so that others may share in all that receive capability.

Where do you live :)

Our house rabbits have seen your setup and are now champing at the bit to visit you for some cable management / trimming. Mains, LAN, Coax, USB, ..... they are all delicacies on their menu.

Well I'm surprised you didn't ask him what time he's not home. 😈

They like to give a personal service :)

On a more serious note cable and equipment management on large setups like @Firebuff66 has is a problem for most of us.

Ideally a shack with a false (walk behind) wall into / onto which one puts all the kit is probably the best option or a large console on casters. 19 inch rack cabinets are another but then one has the expense and then cabinet to operator position cabling.

Add pets into the equation and it can become a challenge to get the perfect setup.

It's normal to love your hobby. When I used to have a lot of free time on my hands I did the same thing you are doing. Hookup a digital recorder so I don't miss anything while I am sleeping. I don't do that anymore but thanks for reminding me of slower times. :)

Enjoy your well-earned retirement!

I guess my 23 plus BASE SCANNERS all running would be a little over the top?
Also running 7 Handhelds in the car.
30 scanners? Talk about having dispatcher ears.

I live in the Los Angeles metro area and can't see using 30 scanners here.
I guess if a flea falls off a dog he knows about it?
