Wow, a real head scratcher here. I'm trying to update the firmware for Sentinel and keep getting an error. It says the server returned an extensive passive error 229. Ok, so I try to write a profile to the SDS 200...all looks ok....it's there but I can't get the scanner to use it after unplugging the usb, turning the scanner off then on. I've even used file explorer to view the contents on the SD chip. It's there! Any help appreciated.

Are you using the correct version of Sentinel?

Resolving Errors
229 Entering Extended Passive Mode. No response from remote host; all connections closed.
This error usually happens if you have not configured your Firewall to allow FTP Passive mode. Please see the following extract from the IBM Manual.
FTP on IBM i is a Passive mode FTP Client when transferring something directly to/from the IBM i Platform. By FTP Specification, sessions only occurs over TCP not UDP communications.
As in all FTP protocol there is a Command Channel and a Data Channel involved to provide the file transfer process. Port 21 is the command port by Architectural definition. To start the connection to setup the characteristics of the FTP session, ie the source IP Address requests the destination IP Address to connect on its port 21. The Firewall must be configured to allow this source IP/local arbitrary port number to connect to destination IP Address/port 21. As this is passive FTP, the port for data is not port 20 (as it is in Active FTP) but an arbitrary high number port that the server returns back to the FTP Client (in response to the PASV command the client sends to the server) for the FTP Client to use in connecting and sending data over. You have to ensure the firewall is not filtering/blocking either flow.

Version 2.02 (Revision 01).
That is the current version of Sentinel for the SDS200. I just downloaded the firmware through Sentinel with no problem, so check your firewall (and possibly virus software) settings as mentioned above.

As far as the scanner not using what you uploaded to it, use the "profile editor" in Sentinel under the "scan selection" tab to be sure all the favorites lists there are set to "on" for both download and monitor before uploading to the scanner, and be sure the appropriate "service types" are turned on.

Are you using HughesNet as your ISP by any chance? That ISP is known to have problems with Sentinel.
Are you saying the firmware file is in the 'firmware' folder? If so, move it to another location on your hard drive in (case you need it later) then try updating the firmware again using Sentinel then see if the 'firmware' folder contains the firmware file.

Wow, thanks for the responses! I'm going to go through all of these suggestions. It's so odd. I used sentinel a while back to program my 536 w no problem. I've totally removed the program, reinstalled it but having a little problem locating where to add port 20 and 21 in windows10. Oh, using T-Mobile for internet. Anyway, keep any ideas coming. Have to go for now.

You are RIGHT! I ended up hot-spotting my phone and using that. Updated both databases!

A little late to the party. I had no problem updating until I switched to T-Mobile. Unfortunately they are now my phone and internet provider, so even using a hotspot on my phone will not work. Is there a way to manually update the software?

If you have a laptop with an SD card slot, you can take it with your scanner's SD card and do the updates somewhere where you can logon to public WiFi.

Yes, manually take your computer to another location with a different internet service provider, such as a library, McDonalds, Starbucks or a friend’s house.

If you have a friend with a BCDx36HP or SDS100/200 scanner with an updated database, he could copy the HPDB folder from his scanner and attach or email the file to you. Then, you can paste the updated file into your scanner. I haven't tried it, but there is no reason it shouldn't work. If anyone has done that, please let us know.
