I'm just giddy to be back into scanning after 20 some odd years. And to do it for less than $400 and a heck of a lot more capable than in the past - what a bonus.

I'm using two RTL-SDR's connected to a Moonraker antenna about 18ft off the ground, mounted to my shed roof with a mast.

I picked up a used Surface Pro 4 for $80 (cracked screen) to run SDRTrunk and SDRSharp. The other Surface pro is for learning. As I'm using the scanner, I'm looking up references, terms, and the like.

Now if I could just smoke my cigars while I'm in here....

Bluetooth transmitter to a potable speaker might be the answer to let you listen (to whatever you're tuned to or scanning, at least) while out enjoying a cigar.

Big or small, as long as we're enjoying the hobby that's what matters.
