Hey guys, I've been around for years but never really posted.

I just got back into scanning and I bought a BCD325P2. I have ProScan and understand the basics of trunking and all of that.

This is in regards to Jackson County's DMR system. Jackson County

This is kind of a basic question but I'm just not sure. It looks like every site has individual traffic based on who is affiliated with (near) the site at the time.
I have every site programmed in with a QuickKey but I can't really decide if I'm supposed to be listening to every site I can pick up or ONLY the site I'm closest to. I believe I need to scan every site I can receive because it is not a Simulcast system and therefore each site has its own traffic. It's annoying though because calls come out from the same Dispatch TGID but will switch around from different sites and it makes it hard to follow some conversations.

Am I just not making good use of the Hold button? Or do I have the delay or hold times set wrong? Any input would be appreciated. Thank you!

Sorry if this should be in Uniden Tech Support.

If you are hearing what you want to listen to on a particular site, you don't need to scan other sites. Ideally you sit on a single site and hear what you want. You only need to scan more than one site if the talkgroup you want to listen to isn't being carried on a particular site at that time.

Thank you for the reply. It sounds like I'm wasting scanning time on other sites. I like to hear as much as I can but the switching between sites is probably making me drop parts of convos. For example, county dispatch might come through the Jefferson site but responses to that conversation come through on the Braselton site. If I'm only scanning the Braselton site, I only hear one side of the convo.

I guess it's a trade-off between site coverage and missing pieces of conversations. Unless I'm missing something.

That's really odd. I haven't experienced anything like that. I definitely sometimes find certain tqlkgroups aren't active on a particular site if no subscriber radio monitoring that site is listening to that talkgroup, but if a subscriber listening to that talkgroup is affiliated with that site you should hear both sides of the conversation.

In your example above, I wonder if the reply actually did go across the Jefferson site as well, but your scanner had already moved on to the Braselton site by then and caught it there instead.

If the Jefferson site generally comes in well for you, try just sitting on that site and see if you consistently hear what interests you. Similarly, try sitting on the Braselton site and see how it goes.

Multi-site trunked systems (whether DMR or P25) often require some playing around, but I can often find a way to hear most things of interest from a single site.

That's probably what is happening. I'm sitting on Braselton only at the moment but can also pick up Jefferson from where I currently am. When I'm at home I can pretty much pick up every Jackson County site being in the center of the county. I end up hearing very little because of the scanning between all the sites.

I'm still hearing plenty of activity, I just want to monitor other areas too. It's a trade-off I guess because the constant switching between 2 sites means you potentially miss parts of the convo

I use a TRX-1 in Jefferson towards Nicholson and scan all the sites. I don't miss much but I can tell you that in LE they tend to take a lot of stuff between units to their cell phones and even some of the dispatch stuff...so you may not be missing as much as you think.

That’s very true! I hear “10-21” or “21” a lot, which, as I’m sure you know, means call via phone. Plus all of the times you don’t hear “21” and they are on the phone and you think you’re missing stuff.

What other stuff do you like to listen to around here? I recently moved here in October from Maryland so I’m scanning everything I can.
