To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Here are a few pictures of the second JK i just installed. This member has a 4 door hard top (2013). I dont have a picture of the UHF antenna but will get one. My wife has the 2010 2 door JK and i'll take a few pictures today. Our third member also has a 2010 2 door JK and is basically the saem with no UHF.

We have tried a few different antenna's on our MCS2000 (VHF 100 Watt) and have found the black Larsen WB VHF to be the best performer. Most member run low power on the MCS unless we need the high power and have never had issues with this antenna in the Ham or Public Safety Bands.

I love the look of that antenna mount and am wondering....does the edge snag on anything? I am surprised the corners aren't rounded. Also what COAX are you using...I found an NMO mount with 17 of RX8X for $33.48 and RG58U is about $18 both with loose PL259s.

Last Question: where did you run the coax through the firewall?

Thanks

I also have a a Jeep JKU. After much consideration, I ended up using the ARR mounting bar and a pair of the antenna mounts (bolted on to the tire carrier).

An FTM350 (control head) and BCT15X are mounted to the bar. Then I have a tri-band antenna mounted using a SO239 connector for the ham rig and a "MURS" antenna for the scanner.

The jeep is lifted and just barely fits into the garage, but I wanted a couple of antennas that would allow the thing to be garaged. So the tri-band antenna is of the folding type. The only reason I bought the MURS antenna (made by Firestik) is because it is a short enough. While the antenna is tuned to about 160mHz, I had no expectation for anything other than hearing strong and local signals. As it turns out, the little thing works great.

A few photos of my 2010 JK Sahara. Excuse the mess, the back is full of stuff for the road trip to Dayton right now.

Mancow,

you've a great setup! It's a clean and neat install.

How do you like your Chameleon V2L?

I've a combo hybrid & V1L and it's performing great on my 2011 pick-up truck. The mount that I'm using is from those people: https://breedlovemounts.com/ They're the BEST mount around. PERIOD!!

Field day is coming pretty fast and I think that I'm going get the chameleon antenna field day offer.
They're offering an entire portable system for about 3/4 of the regular price! This is a great deal.

Sorry for the delay, work has been busy. All of the fender mounts are square like this. I have never seen one get caught on anything. If it does the mirror and other items are gonna hit it also. You could hit the edge on a grinder and round it I guess.

I use standard Motorola NMO mounts from Motorola as when I order a radio it comes with it. RG58U is fine for 99.999% of the mobile installs. Unless your running 800+ Mhz don't worry about loss.

Better late than never...

Well, I got busy this summer with work, and I wound up trading in my 2007 JK for a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. But I did finish those antenna mounts I was talking about and got some pics…

Here's my Cobra 75 CB installed:

This is just a pic of the original Arizona Rocky Road mounts I had installed. 3ft Firestick CB on the left (driver) side, 3ft Firestick AM/FM on the right (passenger). Both are on Firestick Med Spring Mounts.

Same, but with the spare tire removed…

Since the mounts are made out of 1/2" square tubing, I went to my local big box hardware store and bought a couple feet of material to build my custom 3rd antenna mount. I started with a cross bar and built a raised rectangle to get the antenna above the 3rd brake light:

Once everything was welded, I added a small section of flat plate (1/8" thick) for the extra stud mount. Then I painted it black to match the existing coating on the original mounts. Next I routed the cables back up to the mounts and used small zip ties to hold them in place.

And here's the final version (w/o the spare tire). The middle antenna was a 18" Firestick MURS antenna I used with my scanner until I traded in the Jeep.

It was a great set-up, but for reasons I'll mention in my 2014 Sierra thread, it was time to move on to something different. Bright side, trade in values on JK's are pretty high…

But I'd be lying if I said I didn't have trouble handing over the keys… Good thing I still have a '79 CJ5 in the garage!!! That's a whole different build story for another day...

Probably the cheapest way to accomplish an antenna mount on a JK is using a mount Firestik make for TJ's.
Amazon.com: FireStik SS-J4 Crimp-on Jeep Wrangler Fender Antenna Mounts: Electronics

Firestik states on their website that it will work for JK's (they have a little handout for it). All you'd have to change is remove the HF mount and drill it out for a NMO mount…$15 solution not including the NMO mount.

Tire carriers make very nice mounts for antennas on Jeeps. Worked great on my old TJ. I used the Firestick SS-J4A mount but just used the main part of the bracket and drilled and tapped the tire carrier to allow me to bolt it straight on.
