The driver of a semi was killed after the truck rolled over and then exploded near the Morrison exit, shutting down all lanes of Interstate 70 around 7 p.m. Wednesday, Colorado State Patrol officials said.

CSP officials said the crash happened just west of Golden on eastbound I-70 but that all lanes in both directions were closed due to the explosion. The tanker truck was blocking all eastbound lanes.

Officials said the semi was traveling on I-70 near exit 256 and was unable to stop. The semi then rolled over, causing the tanker portion of the semi to explode in a huge ball of flame. The explosion left material and burn marks across the road and the truck is completely blocking all eastbound lanes, officials said.

Investigators are trying to determine what the semi was hauling and how to get it off the road. They are also trying to determine if the material is still explosive.

Traffic was being diverted to U.S. Highway 40. Drivers were being asked to avoid I-70 between Golden and Evergreen. CSP officials said due to the nature of the crash, the interstate was expected to be closed for several hours.
