I'm going to be visiting the Villages area next month, which I understand covers parts of the above counties. We are contemplating buying a place and moving there. I gather that most LE and even Fire is largely unavailable to monitor and those two areas and EMS have been my focus for over 50 years. My other half and I have over 30 years in LE. She hates listening, but I still like to feel involved. Given that situation, who in the area can give me suggestions or let me know what you can still monitor of those areas of interest or what else you find interesting instead? I've read the RR database, but I'd rather hear from local-to-the-area scannists to hear what they find of interest. I'm open to anything and I'd rather not think of all my equipment going dormant. Thanks....

The RR database has a search tool by state/county that will show trunked and conventional systems you can monitor. If a talk group or channel has "DE" it is encrypted at pretty much fuggetaboutit. If it is "D", likely P25 in the clear mode. The SLERS system is EDACS and mostly encrypted.

We have a family home in The Villages (Marion County section) that I visit several times every year. Years ago, I used to bring my scanners with me and enjoyed listening to LE, Fire & EMS in Sumter, Lake & Marion. But as you likely know, the Big "E" took off like wild fire in many parts of Florida, including these 3 counties. Even The Villages own security patrols & operations frequencies went ENC. I stopped bringing my radios with me a couple years ago. Not much if anything to listen to on the LE & Fire side. I will let others who live there full time chime in.

Yes, that’s pretty much I’ve both heard and read in RR. I was just wondering what else if left in that area that people find worth listening to.

Thanks, but I mentioned I’m familiar with the database. I’m hoping for some locals to tell me what they like in those areas for listening targets.

that area up in the northwest-ish of the FL peninsula could be a real sweet spot for military air monitoring.

you have NAS Jax to the NE, Pinecastle Bombing range to the east-ish, Tydall AFB and the various ranges in the Gulf of Mexico, Avon park range south of Orlando, etc.

and ... it's always hopping with something.
