The Larimer County Sheriff's department says the call came in around 8:00 pm Saturday that a young boy was missing on the south side of the lake.

2-year-old missing after falling into Carter Lake
Sunday July 16, 2006

LOVELAND, Colo. (AP) Dive teams were expected to resume their search Sunday for a 2-year-old boy who fell off a boat at Carter Lake in Larimer County.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Kathy Messick said a call came in at 8:08 p.m. Saturday reporting the child's disappearance. Dive teams from three agencies and authorities on foot searched into the night, with the land search expected to continue through Sunday.

The incident occurred about 300 yards off the south shore of Carter Lake, she said. The boy was with two adults, but Messick were unsure of his relation to them.

``They found a life vest. They don't know if he came out of his life vest or if it came out of the boat,'' she said.

The boy's name was not released by late Saturday.

LOVELAND - Sonar and underwater cameras were being used in the search for a two-year-old boy missing in Carter Lake in Larimer County.

The Larimer County Sheriff's department says the call came in around 8:00 pm Saturday that a young boy was missing on the south side of the lake. His name has not been released.

Eloise Campanella, spokeswoman for the Larimer County Sheriff's Office, said the boy was in a boat with his father, another adult, and a three-year-old child.

She said another boat that was in the area had given searchers a GPS locator.

Technicians shut down the outlet from the lake for two hours to help in the search.

Dive teams searched late into the evening Saturday but were only able to find a life vest.

Dive teams including the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Berthoud Dive Rescue, Loveland Dive Rescue and Larimer Dive Rescue were taking part in the search Sunday.

Subject: Missing Child in Carter Lake

As of 11:00 A.M. this morning, the missing two year old who was lost in Carter Lake has not been found. Shay Smith has been missing since July 15, 2006, at 8:00 P.M.

Gil Smith, 44 years old, of Longmont, was driving the boat when his son, Shay, fell over the side.

According to Larimer County Sheriff's Office Investigators, there is no indication of any criminal wrong-doing at this time. Although legal amounts of alcohol were present, investigators believe this did not contribute to the accident. The investigation is continuing as are the search efforts.

A specialized piece of side-viewing sonar equipment is expected to arrive Tuesday from Florida at which time active search efforts will be resumed.

Dive Teams Return To Carter Lake, Search For Boy

(AP) LOVELAND, Colo. Dive teams planned to go back into the water of a Larimer County lake Wednesday in hopes of recovering the body of a 2-year-old boy.

Shay Smith of Longmont was in a boat with his father, Gil, when the child apparently fell overboard last Saturday night at Carter Lake.

Crews spent much of Tuesday night using high-tech sonar equipment to search for the boy while waiting for an expert from Massachusetts to arrive on the scene.

Lt. Tom Greenhalgh volunteered his time to operate the side-scan sonar system and interpret the information it gathers. He's a 24 year veteran of the Billerica, Mass. Police Department. He has been on the dive rescue team there for 20 years.

An extensive search has turned up only a small life jacket so far.

The International Association of Dive Rescue Specialist and Seth Foundation have donated the Marine Sonic Sonar System and the Underwater Video Ray camera being used in the search.

Federal Express donated the shipping costs

Any Updates on this inccident or if they have found the kid?
Thanks

As of this post, no. Pretty crazy. I can't begin to imagine how the parents feel right now knowing that their kid is still somewhere in the lake.

Today's Update

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The Larimer County Dive Rescue Team was unsuccessful in locating Shay Smith yesterday at Carter Lake. They were able to do several sweeps and did locate four possible targets that will be examined today. Searchers are using a grid system with floats to keep them on line.

The Dive Rescue Team will be on the lake today as long as the weather holds. Scattered thunderstorms are predicted for this area. They hope to return at dusk, again, with cooperation from the weather.

LOVELAND (AP) - The search for a missing 2-year-old who fell out of his father's boat into Carter Lake a week ago has been temporarily suspended.

Identity released of 2-year-old missing in Carter Lake

Larimer Sheriff's spokesman Don Nadow said heavy boat traffic during the weekend would have interfered with the search.

Searchers have been using sonar to scour the lake for the body of Shay Smith of Longmont.

Tom Greenhalgh, a sonar specialist from Massachusetts, helped in the search.

Officials will re-evaluate the situation Monday or Tuesday and, based on that evaluation, decide when and whether they will continue the search.
