STOCKTON - A new tool for the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office on Monday helped deputies arrest a man wanted for violating his parole.
Deputies now can check fingerprints against databases from their cars by scanning a person's index finger, said Deputy Les Garcia, a department spokesman. Normally, that can only be done once deputies bring a person to jail.
Deputies at about 3 p.m. Monday received a report of two men stripping a gray van in the 2600 block of East Carpenter Road. A deputy located just one man, who gave a false identity, Garcia said.
Using the Live ID program, the deputy learned the man was Jeffrey Alan Berry, 40, who was wanted on a parole violation.
Garcia said the Sheriff's Office is perhaps the only local agency in the state equipped with Live ID. The scanners were installed earlier this year, but some networking "bugs" had to be worked out, Garcia said.
