Yup, nice signal. Sunrise greyline prop. - good stuff.
How does that work k9? I notice in your loggings you know a lot about signal travel behavior and propogation. Are their transmitter antennas directional? Their target was central Africa so does it reach me via the north pole, or just across the Pacific like usual?

Those curtain arrays they use are HUGELY directional. They're beaming Africa but that just so happens to be roughly the same direction as if they were aiming right at you, over the North Pole.

May I suggest downloading DX Atlas (free) and playing with the maps.

DX Atlas: Amateur Radio software

Take a close look at those shortwave transmitting antenna photos on some of those other threads. You'll see a large collection of dipole antennas on one side of a grounded wire screen. Super directional and super heavy duty construction to handle those 500,000 watts.

Also, learning how to work that grey line. Get that down and that's when you start logging the GOOOD stuff. :^]

Question for Ridgescan

Hey Ridgescan -

What is the website/software that you did the station lookup in your youtube video yesterday about the BBC logging? It showed the map at the top with the station listing below.

That looked like a very handy tool.

Thanks for your concern, Ridgy. We were up at Lake Taupo where the centre was supposed to be, but as it was a loooong way down, hardly felt a thing! Sitting on a dormant volcano, too! People here back at home felt it more.

The Kermadec jolt - never felt a thing and the tsunami was non-existant.

Sounds like a bowl of Rice Krispies here on most of the bands. Im even having trouble with VHF today. Valley Forge Pa today 104 degrees 53% humidity.

Going to give it a go later when it cools down to 97.......hopefully better luck

Howdy all,

This evening I picked up Radio Tirana (Albania) on 9.860 Mhz at 0000z. Heard some music and what I presume was news in Albania-speak. I was expecting Englsh since it was listed in MT's Shortwave Guide, but they did give some information in English at the end of their transmission. SINPO: 35333

Welcome aboard, Chris...

I would not trust any magazine based lists - they tend to be slightly out of date by the time they're published, due to lead times - often the mag is working on articles and other data that is 30-60 days old or more.

A much better resource is the SW spreadsheet put out by Dan K4VOA. It's a compendium of multiple sources such as EiBi, HFCC, Prime Time SW and many others. I just looked and there's a new version dated today.

http://forums.radioreference.com/hf-mw-lw-general-discussion/171179-combined-skeds-spreadsheet.html

You will need a good unzipper program such as WinZip, WinRAR or 7-Zip, and either Excel or Open Office. There's an Excel viewer mentioned in that thread too. Do NOT use Windoze Explorer, as it can and often does corrupt files.

Keep that bookmarked and check it frequently, as Dan updates it from time to time

Also please try to not use any scales for reporting signal levels. There are so many of them - SINPO, SINFO, RST, SIO, etc. - that it's virtually meaningless. A short sentence in English is clear for everyone, newcomers and old hats alike.

best regards..Mike
