• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

What's the best place to get a handheld radio mount for a vehicle? What model is good? I want to be able to mount a scanner or a ham radio with the mount.
I have a 99 Malibu btw.

Eric,

A cheap method of holding a scanner in place is velcro. Take a look at the back of the 96 in the middle photo. You'll see some of the soft side (not the prickly hook) velcro on the back of the scanner at two locations.

What I have done is put the hooks on console then place the scanner on them. With the scanner on its back, I can look down and see the display fairly easily. Holds for most cases and is easy to remove the scanner.

Putting the soft side of the velcro on the scanner makes it more comfortable to carry the scanner if I want to take it out of the car.

They sell velcro that is preglued and I've used this for a number of years. Every so often the soft side of the velcro needs to be replaced as the threads get worn down and don't hold as well. The hooks never seem to wear out.

Notice that I have not done this to the 396, that #$%%$% swivel connector preclude this. The 500 had just come out of the box, but has been modified like the 96.

a cup holder mount? well where am i supposed to put my drink? I already read on here someone uses those but i need more cup holders for cups not less. i'm wanted a real mount with a gooseneck where you can put where you want. not velcro. i don't see how velcro would be any better then the storage sack thats clipped to the vent. And i need it mounted so i can see it and use it while driving.
thanks

take a look at the wiki and look at themountguys.com- they have a gooseneck that bolts to the seat mount- it looks quite sturdy- I am considering one for my car.

Here's a shot of my console, from my vantage point. I can quickly look down and see what the channel is, or switch to another bank.

I've thought about other types of mounts, but there really isn't the room. This is a lot less obtrusive as well.

In Massachusetts a new law went into effect recently that cops can pull you over and write you up for having anything obstructing your view. That's a big safety concern. That gooseneck with a suction cup will obstruct your view. Look up PANAVISE for mounts, in dash, flex or pedestal mounts and the ClipCaddy 777. You can look them over and find a local dealer. I have two ClipCaddy's. One for each of my PRO97 and FT60R radios. One on a flex mount, the other on an in dash mount. I can't drive safe if I look down. I want my eyes looking ahead.

scannermaster doesn't have very many usefull ones and they're expensive compared to the mountguys.com

I will probably go with this one http://www.mountguys.com/product_p/cm625-scanner.htm
unless it's cheaper somewhere else. I remember radio shack used to have those for scanners back when they sold accessories for the scanners and i just looked at they're website and they only have mounts for GPS devices.

This is the same mount I use for my PRO-96 in my '04 Corolla. It works very well, and is very easy to install. I left the belt clip on the radio in order to lift it slightly from the clamp and allow me to plug the rig into the 12 volt port. I also use one of my daughter's small hairbands around the radio and clamp to keep the radio from slipping out of the grip on rough roads.

Undisclosed urban location.
What type of scanner do you have.
If you have a 330 or 396 just a simple mic holder will suffice.
Find a place to mount it and the little round thingy(sorry upman)on the back will fit perfectly.

I got a twist-lock suction cup mount from MOUNTGUYS.COM. It comes in two pieces, and the second piece uses the belt clip part on the back of the 396XT (and the others before it). The part numbers are: RAP-104-224U (Windshield Suction Ratchet Mount; $29.88), and RAP-304U (RAM Locking Belt Clip Base; $7.69). I know that it is pricey but it does work well. It is fully adjustable for the best viewing angle from a driving position.

I have a 2005 Malibu, and I use a gooseneck mount that attaches to one of the passenger seat mounting bolts, and has a clamp to hold my Pro-96. I have the power and antenna cables zip-tied to the gooseneck with enough slack to undo everything to take the radio in and out.

Check out this item from Ram Mounts. I saw it listed here on the forums somewhere else and got one for myself. I now have one in my personal truck, one in my tow truck and have ordered a bunch for friends. My Uniden BCD396's fit in it perfectly. Ram Mount offers many different mounting options on their web site. They may seem like an expensive option, but so far the best I've found.

Did you guys decide that the mountguys mount is decent (Car Floor Mount for Uniden GE Radio Shack Bearcat & Other Handheld Scanners & Radios

I have a spare Kenwood TK I wanted to throw in a vehicle mount. I was concerned that the grips on the side might interfere with the side buttons? I'm also going to put an external mic on there and the external mic plugs into the side. May be able to use those side grips to grip the lower 1/3 of the radio? I'd say there's a good 2" of uninterrupted plastic side space at the bottom of the radio.

Technically, I could probably disable the side buttons on the left if the mount interfered, I suppose.
