Hi there,

I've spend a bit of time scanning through the forum, but didn't find what I'm looking for. My apologies if my best efforts were lazy.

I'm looking for a fully-capable trunk tracking mobile (i.e. vehicle) scanner, preferably digital. The Uniden BCD996XT would more than fit my needs, but the problem is this: due to limited vehicle space, I need a removable faceplate for remote mounting. GPS and and "close call/RF capture" technologies are "nice to have", but not essential.

I won't say money is no object, but I'm willing to spend for the right unit. And the critical requirement is a unit with a remote faceplate.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Many thanks in advance,

KF7ZXT

Unfortunately, none exist.

GRE was supposed to come out with a PSR-900, which would've been the mobile/base version of the PSR-800 handheld, and it was supposed to have a detachable faceplate as a standard feature. Unfortunately, GRE has shut down production and right now their future is up in the air.

The best option you're going to find is to buy a Uniden BC-RH96 remote head and marry it to a 996XT. They aren't being made anymore, but you can still find them. ScannerMaster shows them in stock at $190 each.

Chauffeur6,

Thanks. What's involved in "marrying" a BC-RH96 remote head with a 996XT?

Technically, what do you have to do, and what capabilities are lost?

Thanks much

I use the Remote Head with the 996XT for exactly the reasons you state.

My main unit is inside the center console and the head unit is mounted in the middle of the console. Pictures are below. ScannerMaster still has the remote head in stock. You just run the cable from the remote head to the unit and you are all set. It works fantastic for me.
