Just saw this on the SW Radiogram facebook page. SDR.hu (which hosts literally hundreds of online radios) now is requiring a username/password. In their registration they ask if you have a ham call sign. Hopefully that's not a requirement, but in a way I can understand why they'd ask. In many EU countries you need a ham license to listen to anything but a very few select services.

Anyhow getting a tech license here in the US is child's play....Mike

There's a fair amount of traffic on this subject in the WoR reflector on groups.io. It appears that you only need an account if you go through the sdr.hu website - you can still get to the individual receivers directly....Mike

Comments on the World of Radio reflector suggest folks are making up their own 'callsigns'. It doesn't appear the registration process is checking any official 'lists'

There's some speculation going on - mostly about 'cheaters' on ham frequencies - about why this change came about. Another possibility - and admittedly it's a bit of a reach - is the fact that many EU countries restrict listening to many services without a 'license'. I think hams are one exemption, but there aren't many such exemptions. Perhaps the owner ran afoul of this law? Mike

Below is from the FAQ. It's possible that the site was becoming so popular, he/she wanted to to reduce the loading/busyness on the receivers...or perhaps someone was "lifting" the list and claiming it as their own for profit.

Can I access the receiver list if I do not have a callsign?

No.

Why do I need a callsign to access the receiver list?

The purpose of the site is to serve amateur radio. I decided to restrict access to the receiver list in order to protect the site and its purpose in the long term.

Can I use the receivers for commercial monitoring purposes?

No, you cannot. This is an amateur radio site.
(If you want to set up your own fleet of receivers for automatic monitoring, contact us by e-mail.)

Can I use the receivers for goverment/military purposes?

No, this is strictly prohibited. This site is for amateur radio.

When I registered my kiwi there, I used SWL+<grid square> and it worked just fine.
