it depends on the make and model scanner to determine how to program. A great source of information is the manual that came with the scanner.

I was not referring to the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department but the Los Angeles County Police AKA Los ANgeles Office of Public Safety

Sorry, my fault. I didn't read close enough, but I can help with programming for a RadioShack modeled scanner.

PRO-97 manual ...

The manual that came with the scanner is horrible at best. Go to the Wiki section here at RR and you will find an "easier to read" manual. Download it if needed and take your time reading it. It's pretty tough to listen to some of these trunked systems without knowing the basics.

Manually programming trunking systems takes a little time so that's why I prefer to go with the software for uploading to your radio. It's make it so much easier. Plus you can download trunking systems directly from rr.

I was reading somewhere on the City of Los Angeles Site, that the City and County EDACS system are basically "compatible"....using the same bandwidth, radios, etc. and that with some funding, could be made completely interoperable. Has there ever been a review of doing such things? It would seem to make more sense than having dead spots or localized repeaters.

Karl, I don't think you're going to see city and county sharing radio sites. Politics for one huge reason.

County CWIRS has been tweaked pretty good in the past few years and the notorious dead spots are pretty much gone. Small cells was just one addition that helped. Now we just battle operator error most of the time.

All of this stuff doesn't matter soon. The Sheriff's dept is going to be taking over the public safety police very very soon. Then they will be on Sheriff frequencies. The new frequency for their dispatch has yet to be determined though as the planning is still being ironed out,
