Low volume on VIPER analog

I know I've read posts on this but I've searched repeatedly and can't come up with it so pardon if I'm repeating. My 800 TRS reception of the Char-Meck system is excellent, even at home 30 miles west of Char. While traveling my weekly route to the eastern part of the state the VIPER analog has very low volume regardless of what area I'm in. I'm tuning in via my BC246T,BTW. What was the solution for this that was discussed before, anyone know?

You could hook up an amplified speaker, but then it may amplify too much white noise. Have you tried an external speaker?
