• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Harrris allows a max of 127 active scan members in RPM. Technically about 1024 TG's can be programmed and set to scan, however there is a longstanding undocumented software glitch in which you can only program 127 TG's in the scan list. When you get to 128 or more the radio will never unmute; it's a little deceiving because no errors come up during programming or writing to the radio; the radio just never unmutes during scanning. I believe this "glitch" even carried over to RPM 2.

my xtl will do 14 + selected = 15. in a conventional radio…. but in a trunked radio even with a 5k it’s limited to ten TG’s / channels

Not the XTL & XTS 5k's that I use, they all come from the radio shop with a 15 TG scan list capacity.

The XTS 5k User guide states at p. 47" The maximum number of members for a trunking priority monitor scan list is 15; for a conventional scan list, 15; and for a talkgroup scan list, 10.". The guide defines trunking priority monitor as a scan list of TG's from the same trunking system. A "talkgroup scan list" is defined as a scan list of conventional channels & trunking channels, the name seems a bit inaccurate.

None of my radios scan conventional & trunked stuff together, I guess if I was doing that I would be limited to 10 TG's.

Time to upgrade to an APX.
It's on our list, hopefully sooner than later. I dare say that where I'm at (a very rural area) some folks will be using XTS/XTL stuff until the day before LLA or some other firmware update gets pushed that makes them a door stop.

I haven't worked up a custom scan list yet, but the notion I get is in mixed mode, the custom scan list is a per channel basis. I would think your P1 control channel would be one channel in that list.

You just create a custom scan list and select channels from any system. You do NOT include any control channels in this list. You are not entering frequencies into the custom scan list, only selecting from the pool of channels already in any system (sets assigned to systems). This scan list can then be assigned to any system.

When assigned to a trunked system, trunked TGs, as well as conventional P25 and analog channels are scanned. When assigned to a conventional system, trunked channels are skipped.

I'm not aware of a means to scan both conventional and trunked in the same scan list on a Harris radio.

But with a Harris radio you have the luxury of being able to directly program all channels and talkgroups as true receive only, thus making it easier by far to scan a trunked system without revealing your radio's presence, compared to any Motorola trunked radio.

I still like Motorola radios better but I choose Harris for non-affiliated scanner duty.

It’s called a “custom scan list”. This list will allow you to create a list containing trunked TGs, P25 conventional channels, and analog conventional channels across all bands supported by the radio. This list must be assigned to a trunked system to scan trunked TGs, otherwise, you will only be scanning across P25C and analog channels.

I use these all the time and as long as you keep the conventional channels under 10, you won’t miss traffic.
