Are there any thoughts of inventing a Ma/COm OpenSky scanner? If so, when will it be out?I've posted this in the Macom Edacs discussion forum too.
All of oakland county will be moving to it, but no thoughts on when they will. But i live there and would like to listen to it.

First off...M/A Com sold Oakland County and the other departments in New York, and Penn a system where the technology did not exist. Oakland has a tower in every county with this system and most of the towers are not even on the air. The system is only being used by one department who has not said whether or not it is meeting all expectations.

Oakland County is sucking the taxpayers for everything they have and they have not been honest with the people of the county. This system was suppose to be active several years ago and had they swallowed their pride their new system if they had went with Motorola would have already been on the air and in full time use. But again M/A Com cannot even get the system to work, they need to be honest with Oakland and with the people that paid for the Stupid non-working system

As for a scanner, that will never happen. M/A Com will not release any of its technology to scanner makers. Dont even look for it to happen, though it would be nice eventually when the system comes on the air. There are not enough OPEN SKY systems for any scanner manufactuer to produce scanners capable of trunking it.

Does Oakland County still refer to itself as the "third wealthiest county in the United States?" Sad...

OpenSky, at least in this situation, seems like such a waste. Everyone from the Michigan State Police to tiny little local police departments to county sheriff's are on the MPSCS. And the Feds. Many of those agencies that are not yet on the system are either beginning to migrate to it or are looking for the $$$ to make it happen.

MPSCS is not perfect, but it works. In this age, true interoperability is an absolute requirement. At the World Series this past weekend, you had a bunch of event channels going. Everyone could talk to each other. The state troopers and wayne county officers inside of Comerica Park had the ability to talk to DPD, DPD could talk to the guys towing unattended cars, radio cars in the area could talk to officers near the park, the undercover guys looking for scalpers could talk to the uniforms, the MSP helos could talk to everybody, and I'm sure the Feds, DPD and MSP brass could listen in from some secret-squirrel command center.

/Bush is wheels down at Selfridge on Thursday afternoon
//He's going to Warren for a Bouchard (Sheriff of aforementioned Oakland County)
///Should make for interesting listening. MSP is taking the motorcade from SANG to Warren and back again.

Remember all MSP Cycles are 60 series units.

2960-2969
2160-2169
2560-2569

thusly like that.

Or they will go by Motor #1 However many are working.

Why does Oakland County's management keep putting up with all the delays? It seems they could be imposing a penalty toward M/A-COM if the original contract had been written properly.

Yea, ive emailed the sheriff and asked why they are putting up with the delays, but they keep beating around the bush when they reply to me, they say things like the MPSCS is to old, and people cant get mobile coverage, and things like that. I still cant get a straight answer. So there's no clue on whats going on. Also, Ma/COM OpenSky cant get coverage inside of large complexes, but MPSCS and there "Old system" can get inside of comerica and stuff.

Yup NEXT fall is what I am hearing too. Now ok, after all that, are people really going to trust this system?
What really irks me is how Oakland county complains that Mpscs is too "old". I used to work in system administration and there was NOTHING that came out brand new that went into mission critical applications. Translating that same logic into radios, PD/FD radios are pretty much as mission critcal as it gets. P25 might be "older" but that also means that people have been using it longer, giving big /\/\ more time to fix problems. Not that it is perfect, I would just trust it more due to the amout of people that use it and the length of time they have had to iron the bugs out. Oh and that whole p25 being a standard thing as well.

Not being a hater because I can't scan it, I'm more worried about the users. Also in my opinion; it just seems like these companies are throwing too much BS that can go wrong between the user and the person they are trying to reach.

Another concern is interoperability! I know they have plans on linking it to MPSCS (APCO-25), but how well is that going to work? I thought the lesson learned from "9/11" and Katrina, was to standardize on technology so cities, counties, states, and various agencies could all communicate with each other in times of national emergencies, and disasters. But no! One of Michigan's largest counties decides they're going to do things their way!

It all boils down to politics in the end.

It works very well. Ingham Co has their own system, and it links to any EVENT channel on the MPSCS system seamlessly. Also MPSCS users can be patch in to the mutual aid channels on the Ingham Co EDACS system with no noticable change. Don't lose sleep over interoperability - the systems coming online now are made to connect right into MPSCS.

As long as both networks are up. There is no direct interoperability and one network can not back up the other.

On top of that, every conversation (active talk-group or channel) that is linked uses up resources on both networks. Very wasteful channel wise.

Not that it really will or would do any good, but this thread encouraged me to type an email to the sheriff........I think a lot of folks need to do the same, at least show them our fustration with their dumb system......

Gotta ask the following. Since EDACS has been around for awhile, at least longer than Opensky as far as I know doesn't it makes sense that Lansing's system would link seamlessly with MPSCS. Also and I should really check the CLEMIS website first but shouldn't letters be directed to the man in charge of CLEMIS or even L.Brooks. I think the Sheriffs Dept is really just a user of the system albeit a large user. By all means write letters to the entire county commission because it is beyond ridiculous how this entire mess has played out.
