During the summer you can usually catch quite a bit of traffic just doing a "marine band" search near busy lakes and reservoirs. I hear the marina and park rangers talking sometimes on Horsetooth and Carter, cant recall the exact frequency, but it is in the FCC database. Sometimes you will just hear boats talking to each other kind of like FRS/GMRS.

Some of the marine freqs that you may have in a "pre-stored" bank like the Pro-96, for example, can and have been changed over to business use by the FCC. Also, with not as much "marine" use inland, I'm sure the FCC will just license a frequency in that spectrum to a business, being that the marine band is hardly used at all (here in Colorado).

There are ways to waver the marine frequencies for public safety use, and some areas were auctioned to spectrum managers, but the FCC does not "just license a frequency in that spectrum to business".

Often, during hunting season, hunters can be found mis-using the band to communicate while hunting using handheld marine band radios.

Thanks for your reply, from whatever state you are in! That is more or less what I meant, no need to get all technical! Get your "post number" up to 7000 before you say more. Thanks:)

Ok dumb question. I though I heard in hunter safety way back when, that using radios when hunting was illegal. I wrong?

It is illegal to use the radios to coordinate your hunting ("they are headed down rock creek, I'll keep them coming down to you")
It is legal to use them to keep in touch with your hunting partner and camp
( "I have one down in rock creek and will be late to dinner")

I know several DOW and other LEO types that keep a bank of FRS/GMRS, dot etc freqs in their scanners.
It was always interesting to listen to the group from Georgia come in to hunt using their tac frequency from home that nobody in Colorado could hear, except that it turned out to be the input to the Mesa County SO repeater. As best as we could figure they hunted the flat tops wilderness and never did hear all the SO folks try to chase them off frequency.

Many farm operations in our area use marine band radios- they are cheap and relatively easy to get. Since they are using them illegally- no need to worry about those pesky FCC licenses. They are marketed like CB radios- a local truck stop was even selling mobiles and portables last time I was there.

There was a local radio dealer who was selling them like crazy- I am sort of surprised this didn't set off alarms somewhere when all these marine radios were being sent to a rural area with no navigable waters within 100's of miles.

Monitor the freqs sometime- you may be surprised what you hear.
