If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

MCD5000, the RGU, and how they connect

Greetings;

I'm exploring what's needed to build a system of 2 MCD5000's, 1 RGU, and four radios (to start).

The literature is a little fuzzy on a couple of things, maybe someone here can help. The books say RGU's can connect to consolettes and control stations. My primary question: is it possible to directly connect an APX or XTL mobile to an RGU, or does it have to be a consolette. If it's possible to directly connect to a control station, is it done through the trapezoid?

Thanks!!

You timed this as I just figured out the MCDs- IMO they are a pile of garbage due to how programming was designed. I understand it was designed for large scale systems but it is something else.

In short, you need the latest CT program, Firmware to make sure they all line up, a switch and a laptop.
You then need to

1-program MCD/RGU

2-make a system with in the CT to contain the RGU and or MCD and consolettes- think of this as the codeplug that contains all the RGUS and MCDS and Consolettes because remember the MCD/RGU universe was meant to scale regionally and even via country.

3-There are different flavors of firmwares/ software and CT programs. I supposed you are not using a server for the management of the devices so use NON OMC, if updating firmware use NON OMC

Some Details below to get you started on this convoluted mess- I hope you don't get lost and good luck.

1- Install and run CT

2- Change your laptop network to match STATIC DEFAULT IP of MCD/RGU. Going from memory, its likely 10.0.0. 1or 2( Ie- make your laptop IP 10.0.0.50. Open CMD and ping RGU/MCD)

3- Plug ethernet cable directly from your laptop network port to MCD INTERNAL Port.

4-Now here is the critical part. In the CT, go to Resource-->GW-->and click define GU IP (ie. 192.168.3.100) and press ok. This is where you define the IP ADDRES OF THE EXTERNAL IP PORT ON THE MCD/RGU

5- 192.168.3.100 will now be your EXTERNAL IP PORT ON THE MCD/RGU. so switch your Laptop IP and directly plug ethernet cable to EXTERNAL IP PORT of the MCD/RGU

Now that you have done this part, you must create a system file on the CT.

1-Go to system, create, and name your file then press cancel . You have now created the Database( "codeplug" ) for your CT.
It is located in- MCD5000 CT-->System. Why is this important? because you will need to direct CT to it when you close the CT program and want to reopen it to make some configurations.

2-Now you may be confused and wonder where is the MCD / RGU in the CT I dont see it!!
- well you need to go to resource--->Gateway-->and Add GU to your CT file.
-keep doing step 2 until you added all your devices to CT.

3- Once you added all devices right click on any of it and go to modify, from there make sure UID is unique and paramaters are as you want.
-theres not much to this part so i think you can figure this one out.

TIP:
  • For the consolettes, the IP range must be in the 10.0.0.x range in the RGU. If you try something different it will give you a error box. make sure this matches the consolettes IP.
  • Forgot the IP you set on the MCD? Log into MCD, click menu and go lowest part of menu. It will show you its EXTERNAL IP ADDRESS and FW.
  • This is obviously a supplement to the manual. Im also going by memory so I recommend you read the manual carefully also.

Is there any way to set an RGU to factory default or determine the IP if working with pieces and parts from different sources and no documentation?

Normally you can sniff the IP from the network port with wireshark. Internal IP is one of a few. External can be hit or miss but it should request gateway traffic so at least you'll get the subnet.
