Despite some officials feeling coerced, the Montgomery County Hospital District and the city of Conroe are joining the county's new radio system.
Thursday, both the Conroe council and MCHD board members accepted Montgomery County commissioners' $4 million offer, to assist in purchasing new equipment compatible with the county's Motorola system.
The deadline for the entities to make a decision is Monday.
Commissioners approved the new $9.9 million system in December, causing MCHD and Conroe officials to react quickly in deciding whether or not to move forward with the county.
The city of Conroe will gain greater coverage with the Motorola system because of the addition of the county's radio tower to the system. It is also a cost effective decision for the city, Chief Ken Kreger told council members Wednesday.
The Motorola system is expected to cost the city less annually.
However, coverage, from MCHD's standpoint, improves in some areas, but decreases in others.
According to coverage maps presented during MCHD's special meeting Thursday by RCC Consultants, the Motorola system would improve coverage in Conroe, northwest Montgomery County and South County. However, a lack of coverage appears in and around Willis, as well as along west Texas 105.
BY THE NUMBERS
Montgomery County's proposal by the numbers:
* $616,893 given to the Montgomery County Hospital District for 183 radios
* $750,000 given to MCHD for six consoles
* $1.23 million given to the city of Conroe for 365 radios
* $375,000 given to city of Conroe for three consoles
* $700,000 given to city of Conroe for three repeaters
* $327,692 given to the city and MCHD to do with as they see fit
