More and more often I'm noticing (particularly with TPS) whenever media begins to arrive on location of a scene, one of the officers will let dispatch know. The last few crime scenes that I've showed up to in Toronto, just as I get out the camera I hear, "Media on location. 10-4, media on location".

Uh, what's up with that!? :)

TPS has recently become more militant when it comes to media relations. Not necessarily in a bad way, more so in a "by the book" way. For example, it is policy that Police Officers *must* wear their forage cap at all times. However, as anyone can tell you - that never happens. By advising everyone that media is on scene, it gives officers the heads up to make sure they have their caps on. It also tells anyone on scene that they have to be mindful of any funny-business, as it could be subject to public scrutiny on TV.

There's a few other reasons, but I don't think a public forum is the appropriate venue to talk about them.

I would also think it gives the officers on scene a reminder to direct all questions to whomever the designated mouthpiece is and not to talk directly to the media.

On the contrary... "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?", after all...
