A MedStar helicopter crashed on the grounds of the Soldiers and Airmens Home approx 1655 hrs. Sounds like it crashed in an open area and there are injuries. There were 4 souls on board including a patient.

Helicopter Crashes Near Soldiers' Home Four People On Board At Time Of Crash

UPDATED: 8:16 pm EDT May 30, 2006

WASHINGTON -- A MedSTAR helicopter crashed Tuesday evening near the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Northwest Washington, injuring four people who were on board, News4 reported.

The crash happened just before 5 p.m. District Fire and EMS spokesman Alan Etter said the helicopter crashed in a large, open, hilly field. The helicopter came to rest on its right side.

Four people were on the helicopter when it crashed, according to FAA spokesman Jim Peters. The four were a pilot, co-pilot, nurse and patient.
Rescue workers had to free the pilot from the wreckage, Peters said.

Etter said he could not give exact conditions of the victims, other than their injuries were considered serious. Etter said three of the four were conscious and breathing when they were transported to the hospital.

The Armed Forces Retirement Home, also known as the Soldiers' Home, is located in the 3700 block of North Capitol Street near Rock Creek Church Road and Upshur Street in Northwest.

The MedSTAR One helicopter crashed while on its approach at Washington Hospital Center. It crashed about 1 mile northeast of its destination, Peters said.

There was no immediate word on where the helicopter was coming from.

The NTSB is en route to the crash scene to conduct an investigation.
