Thanks to everyone who chimed in on this one. I appreciate the assistance!
Listening to the problems, it sounds to me that the mic plug itself is problematic. Those 4 conductor plugs are just too small for four connections to be soldered and they break with the slightest misuse. I have replaced several for my grandson's xbox mic/headset combo. they use the same type of 4 conductor plug. You will need steady hands and a magnifying lamp.
These are the best I've found: Three X 3.5 mm 1/8 inch 4 Pole Conductor 3 Ring Audio TRRS Plug Male Adapter USA | eBay
Be sure the wires are in the correct place ;)

It should be easy to buy a 2.5mm plug, short out the appropriate pins to key the radio and determine if its the radio or mic. Or get on some local repeaters and ask if anyone has a 705 that could plug their mic in for a quick test.

Spoke to Icom today...had a nice chat with the service tech. He seems to think the same thing I do, so she's off to Michigan tomorrow. I don't want to play around much with the microphone or the jack since the radio is only a month and being the clumsy oaf I ma I would probably do more harm than good. :D:D

I'd send it in too, maybe it's a one unit issue, but if it's more widespread, the sooner they start knowing about it the better. Besides, warranty work is always better than attempting a fix yourself.

I really hope it's one unit issue. I'm telling you, I am hooked on this rig

SAR Technical Services in St. Joseph MI. Very well respected independent Icom service center. They do some Icom warranty work.

UPDATE...First, SAR Technical was amazing. Radio turn around less than a week. Microphone PTT was bad as a couple here said. Replaced, tested and radio returned. No problems transmitting. VERY happy with SAR.

FYI ... I received a brand new IC-705 a week ago and set up to test the day I got it. My problem was not with the mic keying, it was with the speaker in the mic! I initially plugged in both mini plugs (mic & speaker combo) and set to work learning the radio. The audio seemed to come and go ... with only unsquelched QRN it seemed to fade in and out/change levels randomly. In reaching to remove the speaker plug to listen to the built-in speaker, the handheld speaker audio level shifted as I touched the plug and pulled it out. Putting it back in, just slight pressure on the back of the plug or turning the plug in the jack could create the same effect - also by moving the corded mic around, which was what was happening initially. NO issues with the built-in speaker - it was amazing with no fluctuations whatsoever other than signal changes which were obvious in cause. The two jacks - for the mic and speaker in the mic - are the same type of mini plug/jack, and in doing a LOT of research and reading on the 705 before buying I haven't heard of either of these issues before. I don't know if the issue was the plug on the mic cord or the jack in the 705. DX Engineering was AMAZING regarding a return and replacement. Hopefully just another one-off & Icom will figure it out. And hopefully when my new 705 arrives tomorrow it will be and remain as solid as so many have reported!

My IC-705 is about 24 hours old. I tried to key up for the first time tonight and no Tx. The other buttons on the mic work, and the speaker on the mic works.

If I press firmly on the 2.5mm plug to push it into the radio, I can Tx, but without pressure on the plug, I cannot.

I purchased it from the wonderful folks at HRO Anaheim yesterday (unfortunately about 45 min away). I’ll need to get up there this weekend. Hopefully it’s the plug and not the jack.

In my case it turned out to be the plug on the mic. It didn’t appear damaged in any way. Looked fine, but the connection was very intermittent. HRO was happy to swap the mic and everything works perfectly now.
