• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I finally got a new-to-me (used) CF-53 with Win10 and took all the files from my old programming laptop (WinXP), put them on a thumb drive, and moved them to the new laptop. Unfotunately, when I open any of the Kenwood KPG programs (-38D, -44D, -95D, etc.), I get errors along the lines of "A correct License ID has must be registered. Reinstall the programming software."

Unfortuntely, I've had these software for years, and I have no idea where the original CDs or whatever media they came from went.

Any tips on how to migrate the software from an old radio to a new one without the original disks?

do you have the keys? I would recommend finding the software elsewhere online and downloading it. it's not even piracy because you have the keys. maybe that stuff's still on the dealer portal and a dealer could download them for you and email the installer .exe files. it might be too old though.

personally i would just google those softwares and find get em.

if you still and the original hard drive, how about getting one of those external drive things and hook it up that way ?

From the old laptop, re-edit to the Kenwood FPU line, and you will find your keys there, write them down.
That way you install on the new laptop those key ID. (LID)

THE NEW STUFF, D-x, you want to unathenticate, and then export those out to a thumb drive to load in to your new LMC.

do you have the keys?

Yes, but I have no idea where they are. Clearly they're associated with the installations on the old laptop, since they all work, but I don't know where the keys are kept or how to find them in order to fully reinstall them on the new computer.

I found relevant registry keys for the older (i.e. not KPG-Dn) stuff at "HKLM\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\KENWOOD Corporation\" that record your license key. Other than just looking there for the LID value, you might be able to just copy the registry keys. For example, with KPG-89D:
  1. From a command-line on the "old" machine: REG EXPORT "HKLM\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\KENWOOD Corporation\KPG-89D" KPG-89D.reg.
  2. Copy KPG-89D.reg to the "new machine" and do: REG IMPORT KPG-89D.reg .
If it doesn't work after that, you'll probably need to reinstall from the installer (get as suggested above) and then use the key found in the LID value in the file exported above (i.e., TYPE KPG-89D.reg to see it).

The correct procedure for moving the later KPG-Dn stuff is discussed elsewhere.

I'm going to need to build a new machine soon, too, hopefully before the other one dies, though I'm reminded that we (hopefully) have dutifully recorded the relevant keys here. :)
