In central Iowa , about 40 miles NE of Des Moines.

Ok, So we might be able to hear the same thing unless it is west of you. I only have an inside antenna at this location and I am on the second floor with one above me but I can hear ok. I need to plot when I can. ADS-B gives me about forty mile radius at altitude above FL250.

One thing I have noticed lately is the local Army Aviation unit at Davenport Municipal Airport has been using their UH-72A Lakota on flights around eastern Iowa. Filling in the squares probably. 231.55 is the local Command Post but hear them on the VHF ATC too.

Blowing the cobwebs out of this thread. The annual STRATCOM exercise Global Thunder is ongoing.

In the Iowa area, listen for the E-6, E-4B participating. Oftentimes the B-52s from Minot will transit through the listening area. The KC-135s from the various bases in the Midwest can be heard as well. 311 and 323.8 are good for messages. 8992 kHz & 11175 plus various others are worth a listen on HF. STRATCOM at Offutt was testing on UHF today.

Crypt MOA (NW Iowa) active this evening. 311.3
Fighters refueling from BAT21 and then tactical training/practice. Nice to hear the MOA active, it's been pretty quiet since the F-16s left Des Moines. Fighters using the HOUND callsign, so probably Sioux Falls F-16s. FEARxx checked on, should be a B-52.
FEAR42 working ATC on 257.7

Has anyone ever caught anything on 245.600? All I heard today was something about "being at 31, and turning around". I assume 31,000 ft. , but just guessing.
Was going through old posts and saw this one. I put it in the scanner and heard some occasional traffic on there stuff on there, but never really paid much attention. Figured it out the other day though. It's a harmonic of 122.8, which is a CTAF frequency for a nearby untowered airport! When they were close enough, I was hearing the planes with their traffic pattern calls.

Glad you figured it out! I would hear them off and on. Just never caught enough of conversation ——-now I know why, probably a bit one sided ! I never really thought they sounded like military either. Mike
