That list is almost 10 years old and almost certainly dated; but all those freqs would be in AM mode.

A PRO-96 doesn't do very well in that range; even if you opened the coverage up with Win96, it's no guarantee that the scanner will perform well there. It's just not tuned for that band. Sometimes you hear of folks with good performance, others not. It's a c*** shoot.

Thanks Mike. Why does the Pro-96 fall short in that area? Would a Uniden perhaps do better?

Why the designers didn't put milair in the 96 but did in the 97/2055 (neither are digital scanners, by the way) is beyond me. At one point - I don't know if this was really true - I had understood that GRE engineers were having an issue with cell images showing up in this band, and didn't cover that region so they could get FCC certification (something the cell images would have almost certainly screwed up). Perhaps they have finally solved that issue.

Yeah, at least for now if you want digital and milair, you need to get a Uniden. The new GREs coming out in a month or so look quite interesting. Of course, you also need to get a good antenna - a duckie on milair isn't worth much unless you're really close to a base or MOA.

You might want to stick this site in your pocket....

and since you're in their back yard, Langley flights are a real possibility for you, when you get a good milair scanner (the PRO-96 works just fine in the 138-144 mhz area, and that's where a number of Va ANG flights can be heard) In the Md.forum, we have a long running sticky for milair stuff, and have several freqs for the Va ANG - in addition, we have several Langley 1st FW freqs not on the Langley page above - it's possible this set is used when they're flying in our neck of the woods, and not locally, but who knows....)

I've gotta get ready for work - later on I'll attach a file with Va ANG stuff, but for now - here's the Langley list...73s Mike

[edit] Here's a quick list - comes from the first messages in the thread. I'll add more later if I find anything not in this list tonight when I get back to my laptop

Disregard the VA ANG frequencies. The have moved from Richmond IAP to Langley AFB, so I'm not sure if those frequencies are even used anymore. Also, the use F-22/A's now not F-16. I suppose you could plug them in anyway just in case someone from out of the area that comes to vists uses it.

Thanks for that, Trainman. Didn't know they had moved. I'll be watching the sticky thread to see if they still get used 73s Mike

Mike,

Many thanks for such a detailed and helpful posting. The only Mil Air Base we're close to is Otis and I really have not seen allot of activity out of the area. I.e., visually. The Hampton Roads scanner page like a very good resource as well. I'm curious if I can in fact pickup Langley, will try that this weekend. I'll also definitely check out the MD Forum as well.

Again, many thanks for the excellent information!

You are right. They flew their last F-16 sortie in July, and will be in place at Langley in October. I feel sure that the frequencies will disappear with the aircraft type. I hate to see them go, a lot of fun over the years. And it took a while to find those freqs after they switched over from A-7's. It hurts to have them go silent.

Interesting, I'm way behind. So I guess that VAANG does runway alert at LAFB
now instead of the MIANG that did it for years?

No, the VA-ANG doesn't have the alert duty. They just had their F-16s taken away from them and so the unit has been training to fly the regular Air Force aircraft at Langley. The previous unit that had F-16 alert duty at Langley was the ND-ANG from Fargo, not Michigan. They moved out last year when they also lost their F-16s and have been replaced by the VT-ANG. They keep four F-16s at the Langley Detachment just as ND did. There have been so many changes as a result of BRAC, it's difficult to keep up with who has aircraft, what type they have and where they're located.

Considering some of the above comments about the VA-ANG VHF freqs, they simply are no longer used. The VA-ANG, while flying Langley's jets, will use Langley freqs which are all UHF these days. I'd perhaps keep the Richmond Command Post freqs (142.175 and 289.3) in my scan rotation for now since it's possible for visitors to come to the Richmond airfield and may use them. I'm just not sure if that will happen but I haven't taken them out of the rotation just yet.
