I'm seeing a couple of talkgroups belonging to the Ministry of Finance on the Simcoe Tower and was wondering what they do? Some sort of investigations I presume since it's all encrypted. Just curious.

The only place I've seen them in action in person was at a "random" truck inspection. Local police pulled over "random" commercial trucks in a certain area near a major road near a major highway and direct them to drive to a certain parking lot nearby.

Anyways, before the waiting MTO officer came to look at any paperwork or anything, two (yes, two) finance officers came and checked the fuel tank. Looking for any dyed fuel (farm, less taxed) or residue in the tank. 15 seconds for the two of them to look and their inspection was completed. Then they stood around and waited for another truck to pull in.

Other than that, I don't know. :)

I have heard some rumors that occasionally they sit over by the First Nation reserves and log plates and activity.

I'm not aware of any tobacco sellers or production here in the area. I was just surprised to see them active. Unless they are hitting the edge of the Simcoe tower in Haldimand.

Kind of a myth. I smoked off and on till November 2020 and my ex and i went to 6 Nations so she could get menthals.

I never ever saw Ontario finance trucks, they might have sat on the edge of 6 Nations on Hwy 6 and busted big time buyer's but i cant remember other than 1 guy i know who got busted.

Go into the reserve off hwy 2/53, use a map to see for yourself. No one will ever bug you as long as you dont speed, the roads are challenging.

The smoke shacks are generally not fond of the OPP and they have their own police and rules about tax.

Im sure the MOF we cant hear are for gas and taxes as mentioned on this thread.

I saw the website and they did mention checking that taxes were collected and legal cigarettes and such. I never ever saw MOF go onto 6Nations land and go into any of the 200 or so smoke shops.

Is anyone here familiar with what the province can and can't do or will and won't do regarding tobacco sales on reserves?

The rumoured tobacco info I have heard was more about MOF collecting information rather than enforcement. They have zero authority on First Nations Lands so in person checkups would not be in the cards.

My assumption is they would be more interested in how often cars or certain cars visit and for how long along with how many cars a day, etc.
Possibly as mentioned the routes used. Like any other LE or similar service they have both marked and unmarked units.

I would think the marked ones would be there more to raise the fear flag "REVCAN is hanging around maybe we shouldn't buy today" type thing.

Perhaps not just tobacco, but now cannabis as well falls under their watch.
Good point. I heard very little regarding weed there.

To be honest here in Hamilton its no exaggeration that there are more than 10 weed stores within a 5 block radius of me.

Im wondering if the MOF is more concerned about non natives getting gas at 6 Nations stations and if taxes are being paid.
