I'm new to programming Sentinel for an SDS200 on the way. There is a trunked Federal system that is in the RR database, but does not show up in the current (10-2-22) Sentinel data base : US Customs and Border Protection (4D5) Trunking System, Various, Multi-State If you look in RR, under CA, Santa Clara County, Trunked Systems, you will find it. Please let me know if anyone spots it in the Sentinel data base. Thanks.

I think your URL explains it, look at the bottom: No talkgroups available for this system. Please help ...

That thought occurred to me but still seems worthy of an upload. Maybe someone would find a TG if they could listen to it. I'll put it in manually at some point. Thanks for checking.

It's a policy from Uniden I believe. If there's no known talkgroups in the RR database then the system isn't included in the Uniden database. And as it then are not possible to monitor it in IDSeach mode there will be less chance of people to add TG's to RR's database.

It seems a bit stupid and Uniden should import that system but set it to avoid so it isn't scanned from the database but can still be appended to a favorite list without programming it manually, by using ARC or Proscan and their import from RR feature.

Yes and no. If there are no TGs entered it would be impossible to hear anything - ever. So it' really a matter of logistics rather than policy.
Why waste time scanning a trunked system that you will never hear anything on?

If you want, you can enter it in a Favorites List and use ID SEARCH to find and
identify TGs (then enter those in RR and the system will be available on the DL).

Uniden made the choice many moons ago to not allow the HP based family of scanners to scan in ID Search mode when using the full database. That's why the systems without talkgroups are ignored during the weekly pull, ergo it is de facto policy. Calling it "logistics" is semantics. The option could've easily been provided to allow ID Search without having to create the system from scratch in a favorites list, or to at least import the systems for advanced users to be able to easily append the site(s) to a favorites list that could then be put into ID Search mode. But no, Uniden wanted to keep them "dumbed down" rather than be progressive.

But whatever, that ship has sailed. Thankfully guys like Bob Aune are much more proactive and forward thinking, as the most recent versions of @ProScan allow you to edit the full database including putting systems into ID Search mode. Of course that doesn't do any good when it comes to omitted systems, but it's a start at least.

Perhaps you should make a case for at least pulling all compatible trunked systems into the Sentinel database so that advanced users can take advantage of the new ProScan feature, or so they can at least be appended to a favorites list. Too logical? 🙃

If you want to use ID SEARCH to analyze a system you can easily program a control channel into a FL. Advanced techniques for advanced users that will never put newbies into a case where they cannot limit what they are hearing. Remember the DB was developed for the HP-1 which is designed for people who have no idea what ID SEARCH is or want to use it. The forward thinking is the FL.

All it takes is someone to figure out one TG on a system and submit it to RR. Is that too much to ask?

It is much better than scanning a system that will only waste time and slow scan speed resulting in user complaints.
