So ... it appears that Mississauga has gone to a new system. I have it on good authority that they changed systems in the past two weeks, which, as I was told, can't be picked up using a regular scanner now.

Anyone know what they are using now?

Perhaps the TALUS (sp?) backup radios they were using for the night shift radio checks for the last while?

Whoever told you that they switched systems is on crack. They're alive and well on the Peel Regional Police system.

I imagine the reason for the newer XTS radios is because that's all that is available these days.

*lol* yea...PRP is still alive and well I can still hear them...listen to em every night.

I just don't understand the secrecy behind Mississauga Fire to switching systems.

From what I understand, and my source is someone close to MFD, they were running on both systems for a while until they could make sure that this new system was up and running. Now they've completely switched over to the new system, and apparently, cannot be picked up by scanners in Canada. I was told that in order to scan MFD now, you would have to order one in from the States (Whether or not that's true is debateable tho).

MFD was apparently planning this for quite a while and wanted to make sure it was up to snuff.

I guess this is probl'y the beginning of the end for scanning... if MFD goes off on it's own fancy new system, whats to say PRP isn't going to do the same next? (although I've been told that it's not in the plans for quite a while for PRP, you know that they're most likely going to go this way one day too).

K I have a buddy at one of the stations and Talked with him this morning, BTW i was listening to MFD all last night with ZERO problems. My friend drives a Pumper for MFD and they have not done any hardware upgrades and his Truck still still has the same radio!

So who ever told you that either is pulling your crank or doesn't want you listening! Plus any major upgrade like that would have to go before Council for approval.

I just don't see it, unless Brampton and Caledon are included

There's no difference between a scanner bought here and in the US (except some $$$).

The beginning of the end for scanning happened the day scanners were made :D

The only way they could be secure is go with a TETRA system :)

K here is what i have learned but its not itched in stone... The word is PRP wants to go P25 in the next 2 years and wants the whole Peel System Digital (my guess an hardware upgrade) (some of the guys would know better on here if thats possible or a whole new system would have to be purchased)? Miss Fire and Brampton Fire both like the idea But Caledon is not on the same page. As for the other public services on the system no idea? But what i have learned is whatever PRP wants they usually get it... I would guess when this happens the next step would be for PRP to go encrypted...

Again Mike and them on here would know if and what Upgrades would be required to make that happen. PRP has got encrypted radios now but are having too many problems with them on current system. Any of this make sense?

Well if they're going encrypted, the only thing left to listen to at that rate would be the buses and the taxis.

You can't decrypt encryption right? (and before you all flame me to death for asking that question and send Exkal over to my house with a HT1000 to beat me, I'm still kinda new at this scanning stuff so I'm gonna ask a dumb question or two here and there). :)

Short answer: No, you can't.

Encryption is a deliberate act by the operator of a radio (system) to prevent unauthorized listeners (scanner users and others) from listening in. If you have the proper key to access the encryption function, you can get in, but these keys are exceptionally hard to come by - with very good reason.

Don't forget EMS. EMS isn't part of the City/Region as they're on Fleetnet. So even if Police and Fire went encrypted, you can still hear EMS on the Fleetnet system. So it isn't a total loss.

Not sure why the jump from them wanting a P25 system to it automatically being encrpyted. Encryption isn't free, even if PRP went with encrytion fire doesn't have to. Theres lots of P25 systems that aren't encrypted (most actually) so the sky isn't falling yet.

I never said Fire would be encrypted and that was not said to me. PRP wants the system to be digital P25 and then i guess they will start their encryption not fire... Unless Fire decide later on.. But again this is all in the air, nothing in stone. As far as i have learned Brampton Fire and PRP have been playing with some radios but thats as far as it has got so far, I would think once they figure out all that is needed would they not need to go before the city's and ask for approval?
