what type of systems is it used on? I find alot of mobiles and portables capable of MDC1200 and GEStar signalling, but have not seen Modat capable radios advertised.

Is is an Astro thing? ...on digital systems? or what?

It serves the same purpose as MDC-600/1200 and GE-STAR. It was used on analog conventional systems before MDC-600/1200 and GE-STAR exsisted.

AhHA! That explains why I've never heard it in Maryland. Most systems here are relatively new or at least updated to newer tech specs.

Thanks! for everyone's help!!

Monoc does not use MODAT. It is actually DTMF. They use Kenwood radios and MODAT is a MOTOROLA radio only ID. Motorola also has 2 other signaling packages that sound like MODAT. I forget what the names are off hand. I had it enabled on my GM-300 when I had one.

Now thinking about it, I beleive it was called "Select V". It was a pain to set up but once you got the tone lenghts set it sounded like MODAT.

The other two formats are 5/6 tone and Decimal-Digital.

Actually, I think Decimal-Digital is the generic name and Modat and 5/6 tone are specific implementations.

No MONOC units use DTMF. I remember once hearing a unit using a single DTMF tone for their radio's ID, but that was only for about a week. It seems like most ALS units use MDC-1200 and most BLS use the MODAT-like ANI. Some are also paged with the MODAT-like ANI.
