• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

We have a Motorola Capacity Max system - recently started giving error below when syncing changes from our programming workstation.. (We were trying to add another channel) - Local Motorola tech came out and wanted to ship the system off for repairs.

Error: #541 Failed to read CMSS device info

Appreciate it if anyone has any experience with this message.

I would verify version releases --

An you can look at SA and see if you are logging an Error --

You can certainly call support yourself and talk with a Tech about the issue -- Motorola Custer Support 800-927-2744. In some cases L3 will even work with you to get a remote in connection.

BUT if this were my system, I would take my tech's advise and get the CMSS serviced ASAP. As I bet you have a disk failure developing.

You must have a working CMSS to have a working Cap Max system that's why most systems have a primary & secondary CMSS.

Appreciate your input! We have verified the physical server hardware is OK. We suspect the issue to be with the VMWare host config. Luckily we are able to log into the host and see the VM machines but that's about as far as we've gone. Our local vendor doesn't know anything about CapMax so I'm wasting money having them come out. We will try following up with Motorola.

We have seen issues, specially during updates that were VM related. In all cases the issues were solved by working with Level 3 and in a couple of cases we did give them temporary remote access via a RDP jump host.

Motorola has put out patches for VMWare regarding cap max systems. You should get a MOL/MyView account and be able to get the necessary patches and cap max updates as they come out.

Moto now is performing remote CMSS upgrades due to covid. I am guessing they can help you. Let us know how it goes. TT

Moto now is performing remote CMSS bricking* due to covid.
A scheduled three hour remote upgrade turned into 6 weeks of back-and-forth remote rebuild sessions to get the TWO bricked servers back to their original 2.8 state before the upgrades could be tried again. The most scary part about their upgrades is the VMWare ESXi host upgrade from 5.5 to 6.5; that’s where one of the servers killed itself.

Not uncommon feedback for those scenarios. Imagine customers or other shops trying it on their own? TT
