...I was told that the CM-540 is a very rare radio. I do not know if this is true or not. I was also told that the CM-540 was the very last Motorola CB radio that they made. Can anyone tell me anything about this...

I did not know about the CM line, but aren't the Mocats later than these CMs? I know I had mine circa '77, '78.

Up until I seen those pix, I thought the Mocats was the only CB's that Moto made.

I just love the Motorola CB radios. Thay have the best receive i have ever seen. Here are just a few that i have.

I also have two Mocat 2020's, which are much more sensitive than the 4020 as half of the guts are missing in the 40 channel units. My 2020's now do 40 channels!

Those were very good rdios. The "Extender" noise blanker is the same used in the commercial two-way Motorola low band radios. It really takes the pulse noise out and lets you hear weaks signals. Two 2020's at 4 watts can go the distance.

This is the plug you will need-
2-Position Female Interlocking Connector - RadioShack.com

Not that big a problem to crimp the wires. Be sure to use the female metal inserts. Positive on the top (nearest the "V" notch).

I don't know where any ready made power cords might be.

Wow! I would kill to have that CM-540!!! I got my first CB (Midland 13-882C) in 1976 & I always liked the Moto rigs but I have never seen a CM-540. Very nice radio!

The Mocats were made in the US but the CM series were made overseas by another company for Motorola.

I've got a few Mocats and a 555 AM/SSB base and used to sell them in the 70s and early 80s.

Need replacement microphone for Motorola CM540

Yes Motorola did make some really fine CB radios back in the day. I bought three of the mobile System 500 and a System 550 AM & SSB CB radios. Around 1972 to 1977, ballpark. I have seen the Motorola CB radios on E-Bay at times.

The great thing about the Motorola CB radios was the fantastic receiver they had, it had a kind of slow AGC and the IF was well filtered. The receiver had a special noise/pulse canceling circuit that allowed you to drive down the freeway with almost no noise. Allowing longer range contacts.

The Bad thing was the microphones they used, it was a dynamic type mic, that had many windings around a magnet, that the too fine of wire would break leaving the radio useless for transmitting. By slightly modifying a Commercial Motorola Mic, (which looked great!) changing the mic cord and transistor buffer type pre-amp circuit in the mic, and your back on the air. With a "tricked out" Motorola Commercial Mic.

Thats why I have a old Motrack without a mic.

I have modified several new looking Commercial Motorola Mic's for CB, Ham, and other radios. You usually can find them on e-bay or a swap meet, like the TRW swap meet in Los Angles. It does take some time to add in the up/down switches and other controls but well worth the time when your done.

I know this is an old, old, thread, but your posting is particularly relevant to my current situation. I have a Motorola CM540 with a bum microphone. The up/dn/rev buttons and the transmit all work, but there is no modulation (I know it is the mic because I have another microphone that does work). I replaced the transistor hoping that was the problem, but that didn't fix it.

Unfortunately, finding a working original microphone for that model is next to impossible. If you have a scheme for modifying another more readily available microphone to work with that unit, I'd be extremely interested to hear about it.

Hello C357: yeah ok its doable with some modification to the original mic, as some plastic needs to be removed to make a new mic cartridge fit.

Look under Dynamic Microphone Cartridges and you will a replacement for the Motorola Mic's. Called NC-Carol.

Also any good Tech can wire or make work any mic to any radio.

Seeing these brings back memories. And as one poster said, they did have great receive, even compared to radios made today for AM (American) CB use. Sadly, there was a time when I replaced al of my older CB's with newer versions, and I wish I had kept more of the old Motorola's.

Even their Marine VHF Triton series was excellent on receive. Has been a while since I have owned or have seen their CB radios though. Very nice for those that shared pictures. Great flashback to the past.

I have a Motorola CM 550 with the original microphone. The plug has come loose from the mic cable, does anyone have the pin out diagram for the mic plug?
