To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am useing a motorola maxtrac UHF 16 channel with the 16 pin acc slot in the back of the radio. I am not exactly sure from your post, but if you are trying to encode ( transmit ) tones from a basic Maxtrac, they didn't have that built in.
The Maxtrac will decode QCII paging, but needed an optional board to encode.
If you are using an external paging terminal, connected via the 16 pin accessory plug you will have to choose the settings properly and it should work once you get the audio level set...

how many tone pairs will you need to encode?

It would be 4 to 5 sets. I have the COMTEKK encoder on my computer but I would like to be able to hook up the Maxtrac to my computer and be able to use it like that. I have seen on other post on other sites there is a cable out there to hook up the maxtrac to the computer but i can't find it.

you need to have PTT, ground, and mic high in to the radio. AFAIK there is not a way for a PC to directly ground the PTT only when you wish to talk, so you would have to manually hold the mic keyed and then have the PC issue the tones. you will need a cap in the mic high wire before hooking it to your computer speaker output, since the mic high will have voltage on it.

the radio to computer cable you are thinking of is probably either a programming cable or a cable to get radio to the computer for an audio feed/recording.

Depending on the firmware and logic board there are maxtracs that will encode QCII. In the change/view menu hit f9 call list configuration. You can set your paging tones up from there.
