I noticed there isn't any unit numbering listed within the Michigan State Police section of the database. Here is what I can remember off the top of my head. Perhaps others can add to or correct it:

- If all numbers:
first two digits are the post or district number
last two digits:
01-09 Command
10-59 Patrol
60-69 Local Departments (some village or township)
89-99 Motor Carrier units
K9 K9

- If a letter:
C = Communication tech
I = Investigator of some type
L = Crime Lab

What also might be useful are post-specific designators, if used, like what palzeke listed for Post 25.

Actualy for the most part if the don't use a post number and a letter code they will go off their plate number.

Some others I've heard in my area.

50's Detectives (Not at all posts)
60's Motorcycles
70's Detail Cars
80's Court Officers
99 Vehicle Safety Officers

The 2 closest Posts in our area (90 & 88) have assigned each Trooper a number like the rest of the agencies. So when you hear a number it is always the same Trooper or Officer.

90-01 Post Commander (Michael Loyd)
90-03 Seargent (Barry Koljonen)
90-04 Trooper (so and so)
thru 90-12
C-490 radio tech

I don't know how Lapeer Post 38 does their numbering, but I do know that the commander is 38-01 and the motorcarriers are 38-91 and 38-92.

Numbering

Post 25 uses a combo system, days and afternoons use the beat system, A, B, C, D. Midnight shift and special details uses car numbers,
post 38 uses number assigned to indivual troopers.

""Keweenaw Unit numbering""

Baraga, Houghton, and Keweenaw Counties are all on MPSCS. The fire depts are still carring vhf radios. I haven't heard any grumbling over the radio but many departments are not too happy. Lots of bad spots and many dead spots. Many responders have to carry either a pager or a vhf radio along with their 800 because of paging out capabilities. I've heard them at an accident scene where they couldn't talk back and forth because too far from a tower.

Yesterday I was listening to the DNR on a group patrol on ORVs and one of the COs ended up doing an unintended dismount. It was several minutes and "you went digital again" comments before they realized he was down and injured. They were all pretty close to his location where a simplex channel probably would have worked but too far from a tower.
