Are there any active towers/radio sites located on Mt. Marcy (Essex County)? Have not been up there to look... hoping somebody here would know.

No... It would cost a lot of $$$,$$$,$$$ to run power to the top of the highest point in New York State.

Are you looking for any particular agency? Last time I visited the Adirondacks I don't recall seeing any antennas on top of Mt Marcy or Whiteface Mountain.

Whiteface Antennas

There are antennas on Whiteface, just don't know what they are for. Attached pic taken July 2002.

There are no antennas on top of Marcy, nor will there ever be. Marcy is as environmentally fragile as they come. Besides there is no road access anwhere near there, only foot trails, also no electricity for miles. As far as Adirondack Mountians with antennas, look for fire towers as they pre-date the tightening of construction restrictions by the APA. Whiteface is accessable by a road constructed during the great depression and is home to the climate observatory, making whiteface the ONLY high peak with development at the top. As for who uses it, a quick geo search on the FCC would do the trick, but DEC and Forest are both up there, as well as a couple of ham repeaters. The ski jump towers are also popular locations for antennas.

Happy tower hunting!

As a note, lack of commercial power does not preclude site development. Wind and solar are both alternative power sources that are used to power sites.

Wind and solar power are really hard to maintain at a remote site like Marcy. You would need a huge battery bank and the maintenance that goes a long with it. Black Mountain has wind and solar power and is a constant problem as far as reliability goes.
