You're probably better off asking this in the appropriate California forum....however if it was me, I'd go for the XT but if I wanted to save a few bucks (and didn't care that the digital decode isn't as good as the XT) then the older 996.

No, we can't. Because we're not YOU. We don't know what you want from a scanner.
There are only a very few differences between the old (T) version and the current (XT) version. If you aren't interested in using any of those differences, then the two radios are exactly the same... for YOU.
Besides, the 996T is obsolete. You won't be buying a new one, likely. The current model is the XT version, both of the 996 and the 396 portable.
I would suggest you ask in the southern california forum, where folks might know the local systems.

I have the BCD996T they no longer are available if I'm not mistaken, they we replaced by the BCD996XT.
I also have a BC796D , which for some reason unbeknown to the audio seems to be superior, the features of the BCD996XT a far superior to both of my other scanners.
If you want a base buy the BCD996XT if you want a hand-held buy the BCD396XT, I will probably add to collection of scanners this year and upgrade to the BCD996XT.

I can buy the bcd996t for 250.00 and the bcd996xt for 475.00 that why i ask ok for until next time thanks

If you can get one for $250.00 brand new in the box jump on it. My BCD996T was alot more than that. Almost double.
