N.Y.P.D. V.H.F. Freqs. Pairs.

Does anyone know the freq. pairs and tones ( Repeater out/ Repeater in) that N.Y.P.D. used when they were on the V.H.F. high band in 1973? ( Prior to moving to U.H.F. T-Band). I would like to know. Thanks. David E.Richman. KB2-VXL.

The NYPD used a simplex system with their VHF car radios in the 1970s (and before), until they started to use Handie-Talkies around the late-1960s, early '70s, as a secondary means of communications. However, the portables were not known for their dependability.

What the input frequencies and tones were I don't remember even knowing in those days, nor did anyone else in my "crowd" who monitored (and, in some cases, used) the PD radios. I don't think it was because it was some big secret; it was just that no one cared so no one researched it.

As I recall, the portables were only used on the Division/Precinct level, and not any of the Citywide frequencies.

Many of the old frequencies were reused in New Jersey. 155.7000, 155.6700, 155.5350 were part of the system. They also used several 151 frequencies. Somewhere in the bowels of my records I have an old "Firecom" sheet that has this stuff on it. There may also be some "Betty Bearcat" sheets that were floating around. As I recall, simplex with HT220 portables. I believe 155.5350 was SOD. Would be neat to find. I'll pass it along if I can.

I remember a few...155.64 was 9th Division, 155.700 was 7th Division. 155.535 was the old ESU frequency. When I worked Communications way back when, I remember the Bronx was still all VHF, and the 11th Division in Brooklyn was half VHF and half UHF...D11 had to keep two radio buttons on. I remember the growing pains when the UHF system went into the Bronx.

Wow..Going way back. I can add the following. As ten13 stated above the cars used a simplex system so there were no "pairs" used for the mobiles. The portables did use a repeater system with input and output frequencies. There was one input frequency for each boro. In the Bronx it was 154.755. The input would be used with different PL's in the portables for the different divisions in the boro. This input frequency was also the point-point channel for that boro. So, using the example of the 9th Division in the Bronx, which was on 155.64 as Kieran stated above, it would go like this:

Mobiles

F-1 155.64 155.64
F-2 154.755 154.755 (no PL)

Portables
-----------In-------Out
F-1 154.755 155.64 (PL used on input)
F-2 154.755 154.755 (No PL)

In both cases the F-2 was a point to point. Of course the cars had much greater range.

If you were on F-2 you could hear a nearby portable calling central on F-1 if they were close enough. You would of course just hear the one side of the transmission.

Other trivia from that era.:

The mobiles and portables were both 2 channels only. The cars had telephone handset type mikes. The portables were Moto HT220's.

Highway was on 155.85
SOD was indeed on 155.535 as Kieran stated.

NYPD Frequencies

Is anyone old enough to remember when the NYPD was on 1700
kilocycles ( now kilohertz) AM ?? When I was a kid back in the late 50's early 60's there was a guy who lived up the hill from me who was both a ham and a radio tech for the NYPD. He had one of the police mobile radios set up in his shack and we listened to the NYPD from about 20 miles north of NYC in Elmsford, NY. His name was Jack Shulman and he had to be about 30 years older than me. I'm 63 now, so I would assume that he is long gone.

Queens Central was in the 103 I believe. They had a backup radio system in the precinct into the 1990's.

Yes brings back the old days, I remember nypd traffic on 155.850 Sod was 155.535 Ses 154.770
and Siu 155.685, to hear that one you hads to be within a few city blocks as they transmitted with flea power.
