Many news stations picked up the archives and aired them, especially in the bay area. Most credited RR per the creative commons license.

We could easily get 1000-1500 bucks per archive for these types of incidents, but since the feeds are for the most part provided by our volunteer community, the creative commons license makes most sense.

If you saw a newscast that you can confirm used the archives from RR and didn't attribute to RR, make sure you let them know.

thank you radio folks

I cannot express how much I appreciate the ability to click onto live feed via my computer. I am totally incompetent with a car radio, much less a scanner. thank you to all the great gracious radio people who not only record history, but let the public share! Maureen Hamilton

I agree the audio should be given proper credit---it's fantastic to be able to hear the initial calls like this.
I live in San Bruno--a safe distance away from the fire--and the whole thing has been unreal.
I never though Bruno would be on Brian William's broadcast or any other national news outlet.
The event really brought home just how invaluable it is to have a well programmed Scanner and having the
audio feeds is an alternate means of keeping informed on a national scale if needs be. Great Job !

I must say that following the action here on RR and the online stream from Ch 7 out of San Francisco seemed like the only way to find out what was going on at the time.

Of all the national news outlets, the only one that seemed more interested in an actual news event was the Weather Channel. Indeed, I learned about the event from chatter on Twitter! I am not sure what that says about CNN, MSNBC, FNC, etc., but it seems to me that a current event of this magnitude should have trumped somebody seeking his 15 minutes of notoriety.

I couldn't agree more, and was just thinking the same thing a few weeks ago! It seems of late that what should be breaking news on a national level gets maybe a casual mention or two on the so called cable "NEWS" networks. Seems they're more interested in airing talking heads or who knows what.

The best thing I can compare it to is...hey, remember back when MTV actually played music videos?!?

san bruno feed

2 hrs in I saw 2500 listeners. For the moderators, is this a record? I do not remeber as many listeners on a feed before.

Could someone post the link to the archive section and what time the incident (the window of time) that we should listen in for the best recording of the event. Thanks again for the feed...

A while back when the Tsunami was supposed to hit Hawaii, the number of listeners was at this level and for a few hours, a tad more.

RR Getting some good press. Lindsey i wonder if any PD's use the feeds to look back on a case or a past event for use in court. i wouldn't be surprised at all if they do.

also are you in talks with any big metro area PD's or FD's into doing feeds for them ?

Seems to me the count was over 3100 when I signed off at ~ 2355 (CDT). I imagine that statistics like that are recorded somewhere in the system.

Lindsay, any hard numbers available?

I doubt it could be used in court. They are required by law to log all of their radio traffic and usually record all of it. In court you have to establish a chain of evidence and since the police have no control over the archive, there would be no one to testify that the archive is a complete and accurate account of what happened.
On top of that you have the issue of who holds the copyright. The police department that originated the traffic or the people that recorded it off the air. In broadcasting, the station holds the copyright, not the people taping the shows at home.

I guess it is nice to have our hobby and RR used and portrayed in a non controversial news story. I do resent having someone else besides RR and Scanner Radio basically ripping us and RR off by broadcasting our feeds and even charging for the service and editing the archives for distribution. I know creative commons license...... Any how.. good work on the feed and thanks to Lindsay and his crew for moving the hobby forward.

Nice job Radio Reference and especially to Richard Tidd for providing such a clean stereo feed. This was such a crazy event that I posted an archive clip on my Chicagoland fire site coupled with the network news video I recorded. And of course I gave RR the credit.
