Greetings,

Please forgive me if this is clear in another section, however, I'm still confused. I will be traveling through NC on I-95 and if I want to listen to the NCHP will I need to enter both the traditional low frequencies and the VIPER frequencies? Or can you suggest something better?

Thanks in advance for your guidance!

A lot of us are quickly switching to VIPER mobiles now, so going down I-95 with 800mhz only should do you fine. It's not going to make a difference if you program in the low band stuff because even if you do, you'll only hear the dispatcher 99.9% of the time. You may hear some car to car traffic but I doubt it. Stick with 800mhz IMO.

jthorpe is right on this one. Unless you're gonna go through the trouble of programming both the frequency "pairs" for each troop & district its pretty much pointless. Stick with VIPER & you should be good to go !!

BTW what type of radio/scanner are you going to be monitoring with? Reason I ask is VIPER (SHP) in paticular are moving all the dispatch talkgroups over to digital though I'm not sure if it's complete just yet.

Thanks to both of you for your replies, that is very helpful. I have both a GRE PSR-500 and a Uniden BCD396XT.

The digital talkgroups are there, but none of the districts are using them yet. I can only tell you that in my county, we do have a couple of digital groups we use for mutual aid kind of stuff, but those aren't actually SHP talkgroups.

I thought the radios operated on analog or digital interchangeably. In other words, you set it on a TG and it works with both. We use digital in Wake County, but can go to on Troop C Mutual Aid (analog I think) and still are able to talk with the Patrolman.

The troopers in Wake are Analog and many other agencies are still that way, such as Apex PD. When P25 comes out, then everything will be digital but not right now. The radios are compatible. I work on my main analog channel and switch to digital channels all the time.
