I have only been able to have dial up service in my area. I need to download frequencies in a zip file. How can this be performed so I may download efficiently and not wait forever for them to load. Please explain to me in detail how I can download the frequencies I need into a zip file so I may be able to add more frequencies to my PSR 500 scanner. Thank you in advance.

If you have software compatible with your PSR500 (see: Object Oriented Scanner Software - The RadioReference Wiki )you can download from this site without the use of a zip file. It is generally fairly fast, even with dial up. YOu only have to download once, so even if it is a bit longer with dial-up, it is worth it. We don't provide zip files, but you can get CSV spreadsheet downloads.
You can also see if another member from your area will provide a zip file, but it must be compatible with whatever software you have, so please indicate which one you have. You also need to provide your state, county, and general city location if you hope to get a zip file from another member.

So you have a PSR-500 scanner. I expect that you have the USB cable so you can program it from your computer.

I see that you have a premium subscription to RR. That means with the correct software you can download (it is called "importing") frequencies into the software, and then upload them to your scanner. I use a program called WIN500, you can get it here.

Plug the cable into your PC. Go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device manager -> Ports and see it listed. Note the COM port it has been assigned.

Download and install the WIN500 software. Plug the cable into your computer and scanner. Run the software. Enter the correct port from above. You should be able to control your scanner from the software.

Use the "import" function in the software while connected online to get the data from RR. The data is not large and does not need to be zipped. It should work ok from a dial-up connection. Once you have the data set up in WIN500, save it to a file. Then upload it to the scanner.

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention I have WIN 500 installed. How do I proceed from there? I tried the conventional download but nothing was downloaded after an hour. Please advise.

There was one very important step missing here. Looking at the COM port in Device Manager, make sure something else - like a Bluetooth, USB camera, etc. - isn't already using the port. If the software - which is basically dumb - did this, you're going to need to reallocate it. You will also need to insure that the COM port in the software points to the COM port shown in Device Manager. This might be the reason why Win500 didn't upload/download anything to/from the scanner - it was waiting for an available port.

Assuming all that is OK, this article should help you along with how to use the Import function in Win500. It was written by one of our members that sadly passed away some time ago, but most find it very useful...just click on the blue text and start reading...
