• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

My brother gave me a pair of Motorola 2 way radios, but im having a difficult time trying to identify what model they are, and what some of these switches do. Ive uploaded some images, this is the first one, this one works well, at least I couldnt find anything wrong with it, it dosent make funny sounds like the other one does. On this one, I want to know what the A B C switch does, and what the number knob is for, im guessing channels.

The radio is a 900 mHz portable that will not work on the amateur frequencies without some interior reworking. You can look up those things at Batwing Laboratories under Model Specific Information. If you go this route you will also need programming cables and the special program software that is licensed by Motorola to users, if it's still available, that is. You can also look at http://www.motorola.com/governmentandenterprise/contentdir/zh_CN/Files/ProductInformation/MTX960.pdf, plus the almost 15,000 Google entries for this radio.

Motorola puts the name on the front of its radios and this one is an MTX-900 just like it says on the front.
Looking at the design of the radio it is part of the Genesis series of portable radios developed by motorola in the 80's. Motorola was dabbling with 800/900MHz systems back then and this radio is one of them. It covers from about 900-930 MHz.
The ABC switch will do whatever its programmed to do.

I forgot to mention, the internals on both radios are slightly different when the faceplate comes off, the little components that look like square blue trimcaps are completly diffrent in the 2 radios. I can carry a conversation between the two If I power one with a 9v battery...

The radios are MTX900s. Minor internal differences mean they were made in different factory runs and/or at different times. Fact that they talk to each other confirms that they're the same radio. Is that mouse used on your computer or does he live in the pantry?

Oh, I ment to upload the photo of the two batteries I have for them, one is producing no current at all, and the other actually operates one of the radios.
Where can I obtain a manual for these radios? I tried looking, but all I found were just brochures, and not actual manuals.

Thats my pet rat, who enjoys sitting on my lap while I take stuff apart.
