I was scanning through the 400mhz UHF band tonight and was picking up chatter on both 408.0375 and 462.2500. The same people were using both frequencies. The signal from both of these were very strong in the Clay area. It sounds like something industrial with stuff like "hold the circuit", "we need 24v for this transmitter", "whats the water level up there", "we're going to get your rigging put on the number 2 box for you" "what pump have you been running as primary lately". Each person would use an ID number, like "31" followed by the name of the person they were contacting.

I did run an FCC check, and the closest user for those frequencies was US Steel in Fairfield, and that only came back for the 462 frequency, not the 408. If it was them, that's quite a stretch for me to be able to receive it in Clay.

Any ideas?

The frequency 408.0375 is the Bham VA Hospital Maintenace (DPL 134). The 462.250 is U S Steel. From the traffic you gave I strongly suspect it is them, but could be another industry in the Bham, JeffCo, Shelby, St Clair area (Chemical Lime - Shelby Co). You might check the listings for 462.2375 and 462.2625 as well.

Thanks. It just sounded like it was the same group of people using the frequency.

Any idea if they're using a repeater or not? Seems like a pretty good distance to cover to my location, unless there was some kind of band opening or something like that.

I'm sure U S Steel (USX) uses a repeater and I can hear the VA here in Center Point (off Old Springville Rd about 1 mile South of Chalkville Mt Road and I'm pretty sure they use a repeater too. My bet based on what you say you heard is that it was USX and the 408 freq is an image of the 462 freq.

The True Answer will be in seeing what you had for a PL/DPL on the two channels. As others suggested it sounds like an Image of one of the Real Frequencies.;)

462.25000 is U.S. Steel / USX Fairfield Continuous Caster. The repeater(s) is on Flint Ridge according to my Dad (who should know after 40 years out there!).
462.35000 - #8 Blast Furnace
461.45000 - Q-BOP
