I need to make an antenna for my 2-way radios that work on 151.625mhz. I have a pre-existing tower about 80-100 high. with a crap antenna hooked up to an old Motorola base station. I am on a minimal budget and am looking for ideas or plans to make one.

get on ebay, they have some good deals on antennas. You can't go cheap on a antenna,
If not try a J pole, I had one for GMRS. it worked great.

where are you located?

Hams are good for public service, are great for donations and a lot of help. FYI we work with the BSA so you might look toward the Amateur Radio clubs in your area for assistance. Many are communications professionals and you can take advantage of their connections in the industry. Try posting on a few of the ham forums (Google is your friend, use my callsign as a key word) in order to reach a wider and more appropriate audience.

Hi again I and all,

We have a sticky wicket here, you say you have a license but it appears the Mississippi Valley Council holds it and Jerry Walker of Laguna Hills CA is the trustee. Under the terms of the license grant there is no base (fixed) station listed, only mobiles. While the Council is the licensee it's actually the transmitters which are licensed so a fixed station would constitute transmitting without a license.

Putting an antenna atop a tower is a bad idea but a temporary fixed station MAY be allowed (I don't see a TB listed) using an antenna put up and taken down easily. Say for example on a temporary roof mount as needed you MIGHT get away with. I'd look more closely at the terms of the license grant if I were you to keep the BSA out of trouble with the FCC and you out of trouble with the BSA.

More than one quasi-government agency, has gotten in trouble with the FCC over such issues. An FCC license doesn't convey carte blanc operation. The FCC has been under pressure to find a source of increasing their contribution to the Feds. They go after towns, counties and businesses that depend on their radio systems. The Boy Scouts would not be exempt from a hefty NAL.

151.955 can be licensed as a base (FB) that would make your operation legal as long as you did not transmit on 151.625 from your base.

Man Guys he's is just trying to solve a legitimate problem within constraints of minimal funds to help out a good group that supports our youth. Not to have one lecture after another about the FCC and what could happen. Advise is great. But his question was only answered with more questions. Its an antenna nothing more, nothing less. If I have a VHF antenna laying around here I will gladly donate it to you for the Boy Scouts. It may only be a mobile antenna but it should work for what you want it for. Let me look around and I will PM you with what I find. Hoser

If it violates the terms of his license, it's not exactly legitimate, is it.

You know, that's the trouble with experienced radio people. It's that damned attention to detail. It get's 'em every time.

True, but keep in mind who's here answering the questions... people with LOTS of experience who can smell trouble at the slightest sign. Maybe knowing that there's a potential violation could cause the OP to find a different solution. He may not know it now, but they're really doing him a favor pointing this out.
