• Effective immediately we will be deleting, without notice, any negative threads or posts that deal with the use of encryption and streaming of scanner audio.

We've noticed a huge increase in rants and negative posts that revolve around agencies going to encryption due to the broadcasting of scanner audio on the internet. It's now worn out and continues to be the same recycled rants. These rants hijack the threads and derail the conversation. They no longer have a place anywhere on this forum other than in the designated threads in the Rants forum in the Tavern.

If you violate these guidelines your post will be deleted without notice and an infraction will be issued. We are not against discussion of this issue. You just need to do it in the right place. For example:

Don't know about the South Bay but I've got a discone on a 40 foot mast up here in the North Bay and my Pro-96 is completely deaf to the SF trunk system. I can occasionally just hear the control channel if conditions are perfect. The SF system seem to have a really weird radiation pattern. I can get everything around it (ALCO, Oakland, Richmond, BART, CalTrans, and UCB) but nothing out of SF. If you do a search here, you'll find a coverage map and it seems to node out signals to the north and south.

The encrypted medic channels are an overreaction by San Francisco to the federal HIPPA regulations regarding patient privacy.
Thanks for the tip, I'll have to check the coverage map. I'm sure more height will help as I do get _some_ signal, but it could just be a losing battle.

Fascinating about why they chose to encrypt the medic channels! I would have never in my life guessed that, but of course once you said it, it makes sense.

Thanks,
Jeff
