Trying to start with antenna. What HF bands are active currently? That might dictate what type to purchase. Live in metroplex with small yard with overhead electric lines on two sides. Any comments appreciated.

Every HF band is active currently, due to the sunspot cycle. If you had to pick two that will work all the time, regardless of cycle, it would be 20m and 40m for me.

Thanks. Big help. Trying to start with one or two bands seems prudent. Any recommendations on antennas.

Hi @KF5APL and welcome to Radio Reference!

With respect to all public utility wires and equipment, and especially the high tension (voltage) electric utility wires, make absolutely sure that if any part of your antenna system should fail, nothing will come into contact with any public utility wires and/or equipment. It is best to have a 20 foot separation in all directions to any public utility wires and equipment.

What type of activity on HF are you looking for? Local ragchew, regional, DX? What operating modes? Answering those questions may help you choose the best antenna type for what you would like to accomplish.

Probably regional. Not sure the difference between regional and DX. Currently I am running VHF & UHF. Mainly I want something with high probability of success for a HF first timer.

I see you dont have a QRZ.Com Account so your a new ham because they ususally put you on the list.
I agree with the other posters you neeed to figure out the basics and learn there are so many modes
to cover. Running a CB Verticle will get you on 10-11 and 12 meters with a antenna tuner. you can try an SDR Dongle and software
like HDSDR or Run a President Lincoln 2+ New or Used to see if you have an interest. Out of all the modes I love FT4 and FT8
which even with a tech Ticket you can play with.
You could also get away with a delta loop in a small area.
