I am looking for someone in the Sacramento area who could help me learn how to use my brand new scanner. You might have seen my messages on the Radio Shack forum over the last couple of days. My husband and I first tried to follow the manual. We also downloaded the "Easy to Read" manual and we managed to erase the V-Scanner folder (V-6). Then I went back to Radio Shack and bought the USB Scanner/PC Interface Cable and tried to re-load the V folders we erased. We are not even sure that we actually loaded anything because nothing we did in following the directions resulted in the way the manuals said that it should look like.
I have taken the scanner back to three different Radio Shack stores trying to find an employee who knows anything about this particular model of scanner, but each employee I spoke to reported that they could not help me. I took my scanner up to a technician who works for my county's radio/communications department and he had no previous experience with the model, but managed to put in the frequencies I want. Unfortunately, he could not figure out how to put them into separate scan lists.
My main goal in scanning is to listen to the various public safety agencies of southern Placer County, with a primary interest in Roseville PD. I was given the Pro 197 model because it could handle Roseville PD's trunked system - but I cannot make it work!
Is there anyone out there who can help me? I wondered if there is any kind of class or group that meets to discuss scanning - this forum is great, but I have the feeling that I will need more direct help. I certainly don't speak "scanner" and I'm not sure I will ever grasp the complexities of programming. I just want to be able to turn on the scanner and here about what is going on!

Get the software...

Win500: PSR-500, PSR-600, PRO-106, PRO-197 Scanner Software for Data Management, Monitoring, and Control or

Butel Software

then the cable...

RadioShack® USB-PC Interface Cable for GRE Scanner - RadioShack.com

Next become a paid member of RadioReference.com - Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference

Start the software... connect to RR and download the file(s) for the area(s) you want...

Download it into the scanner and you're good to go. It doesn't get much easier! :)

K4IHS has best solution but try this one page Programming Shortcut PSR-500/600 RS Pro-106/197 - The RadioReference Wiki
Edit:Your two systems require only the top 20 items for programming.

Pro-197

Hello Icon50,

Welcome to RadioReference.com. It is very rare anymore that you'll find anyone working at a Radio Shack that knows anything (especially about radios). They are SALES people (if that).

I have not been online for a week, but am back now. I am in the area, familiar with your scanner and most other GRE made models (GRE makes the PRO-197). I am using WIN500 software to program that model.

I do not believe that Placer County has truly implemented that trunked system yet, but certainly the PRO-197 is the type of scanner needed to monitor it. The Placer county system is a little trickier than most to program, because it is a VHF trunked system. Most trunked systems around here are UHF (Sacramento county uses 800 MHz).

Let us all know where you are with things and what specific help you need now. If you've got software to program the scanner, the cable, and it is all working; that is a huge step toward reaching your goal.
