It's likely that the only printed material containing the signal codes is among the training materials that new officers receive when they join a law enforcement agency in that county.

If someone with a code list does not respond to your request, * you might be able to discern the meaning of some of the codes simply by listening to the context of how and when they are used. For instance, the codes for starting and ending a break for meals might be obvious if the officer mentions an eating establishment when using them.

The second option is to go to the Sheriffs Department and ask for a copy. Explain that you are simply trying to understand what's occurring when you are listening to your scanner "AT HOME."

A third option is to keep a list of those codes you're having the toughest time identifying. When you see an officer who is not pre-occupied with a call, ask him about one or two of the codes. Some of the best places to "chat" with an officer can be sporting events, such as high school football or basketball games, or businesses where they are providing security.

* Lugoffman - one other suggestion ... be specific about what you need when you "name" a thread on this or other forums. For instance, rather than "Need Some Info," consider something like "Need Codes For Kershaw County."

There's a much better chance that the people who know will read the thread and respond. Which would get your attention: "Car For Sale" or "'68 GTO For Sale" ?
