Just got an email from GRE about the CES show next January in Las Vegas. GRE will be unveil a new compact super easy to use scanner and Next generation digital scanning receiver. I guess Christmas is not over, time to start waiting again.

I really hope that when they say "Next Generation", they mean Phase-2 P25...

Or at the very least; something that can handle simulcasted P25 systems.

I think it's about time for both.

Gee I wonder what scanner database it has pre-loaded:p on the SD card. It looks like a nice scanner for the hobbiest who does not want to be bothered by programing the scanner.
I wonder if it will look like a GPS unit like the Home Patrol:lol:

Yes, I would prefer seeing a GRE Home Patrol type of scanner. Since I am biased toward GRE, I would love to have a decent choice between major brands when it comes to a Home Patrol type radio, provided that is what they are unveiling.

I wish GRE would make a Home Patrol with the capabilities of altering data within the radio to remedy problems that may occur with the RR DB. Furthermore, I would love to see a new and improved version of their BNC module.

I am not impressed with the Home Patrol external antenna system. Since I've always been very rough on BNC housing, I believe it would be a disaster for this listener. I cannot recall all of the times I sent my Uniden 245 XLT in for repair. So, I am anxiously awaiting the details about this new scanner.

so excited! Game on finally!

I was so excited when I got that email from GRE this morning. I am a GRE kinda guy.. Although I have some unidens... shhhhh do not tell anyone..

Now time to sell some old stuff and buy the new one.. GPS, wifi updated database- on demand, not to mention blue tooth and of course some place to store a cold drink... A brick phone from the 90's in size and that durable too..

Now lets see what they bring out!

GRE is always thinking about the next generation. Maybe they will beat Uniden on the HP one, and the latests X series..

GRE is also know for quick firmware updates... so excited to see what they have out there being tested.

If it's just a digital PSR-700, then I think I'll stick with my 500 & 600.

As long as we have a wish list going...

I'll take a 500 with Bluetooth for covert, hands-free listening, and a volume control that is click-detented or stiff enough to not get adjusted by rubbing against a jacket pocket or slight breeze. I really do like Uniden's approach on the 396 for that.

Lots of mixed messages out there. GRE is holding onto its pricing on the 500/600, while Radio Shack has been literally dumping them two sales in a row. Given the popularity of the HP, it would be hard to blame GRE for putting a competitive product out there.

One thing to remember about GRE is the extraordinary degree of access they've given the end user to the radio's internal programming. I could be wrong, but I don't think the 700 is the wave of the future. While Uniden tends to protect the radio and its information, GRE seems to trust the end user and has worked hard to make a lot of options available. With the 500/600 they tried hard to accommodate both novice and advance users. If they unveil something new, I tend to think it'll involve the best of both worlds. If nothing else, being able to load an SD card up with memories is definitely a tasty idea.

Hard to know about P25 phase II. I think that phase II systems can be more proprietary. Ditto for MotoTRBO, NEXDEN, IDAS, etc...but I keep my fingers crossed.

I'm continually disappointed in both the taper and physical characteristics of the volume control of the PSR600. Uniden has them beat on both with the positive detent and audio, not linear taper of the volume controls an all of their DMA scanners. The Scroll and squelch knobs have a nice feel to them as well. I'm not crazy about the five way pad on the GREs either.

It's what they put in the trucks at work (currently), so that's what I have to use.

Geez, I hope not. I hate switching brands.

New GRE scanners

I've heard new models will be PSR-510 and 610. All black cosmetics, new display like the 310 and 410, an SD card slot and software comes included. Got this right from GRE about a month ago, we'll see.

I agree with this 100%. My GRE scanners are so fine tuned that I feel like they are almost as good as my high-end Motorola digital stuff...better in that they can scan so much more at one time. Even my WX alert works while scanning with the custom setting of 9.9 seconds and smallest window "hole punch" for detection. The scanners are darn good! Yes, I needed a FM broadcast filter to use VHF Hi band on a good antenna, but all else really works well.

If they do make an HP type scanner, I hope they do it better than Uniden. And I would wish it had the GPS tracking ability, as well, but somehow think a patent might be in the way of that function. :( And I would really want more than a "dummy" scanner, like the HP. I would want a 500/600 with the addition of the HP type features, so you can do more with it than just use the RR database. Oh...and while you're at it, throw in MotoTrbo, D-STAR, and whatever else is out there that could be added. ;)

I have to say, GRE really is making good stuff. And I never feel cheated, or duped into buying another scanner. They do it right, and I make the most of their scanners. Don is very good at what he does! If I didn't say it before, I'll say it now...THANK YOU, Don! :)

I would prefer that GRE not pursue the location based scanning. I could use it on my 396XT but the information required to do it correctly just Isn't there yet. The other issue is the use of it. It is useless if you are not mobile. I would hope that they continue to refine the qualities that are actually useful for listening. They have a significant lead there and I would like to see them extend there lead instead of adding bells and whistles that have little to no use.

The Phase II standards have not been finalized yet, so I would not expect to see any Phase II capability in any new scanner for awhile. It will probably take quite some time after the first Phase II systems are into use before we see anything capable of scanning them. Otherwise the scanner manufacturers would have nothing to test products with.
