Hey y’all. I just got my ham license and am starting out with a AT-201 and am having issues trying to figure it out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Congrats on getting your ham license!!!

The ADI AT-201 is a 25 year old radio which I am not too familiar with. Is it the USA version or the European version? Also, do you have the manual and necessary programming information? Please elaborate on your assets and specifically what issues you are having and what you need assistance with.

One other question… What options are installed in the HT? For example, CTCSS/PL was an option and without it, you will be severely limited on what repeaters you can access.

Can’t seem to get any transmiss out. Receives pretty good
When you say it “receives pretty good,” what are you receiving? Are you receiving local ham repeaters in your area? If so, do you know where the repeater is located? You are in the EN72eq grid square which is near Grand Rapids so there are quite a few 2 Meter FM repeaters in your area.

Did you buy the radio locally from a ham? Just wondering how it was programmed for your area.

As for the transmit side, there is a red indicator light on top of the HT towards the front in between the two knobs. Does it turn RED when you depress the PTT switch? The antenna attaches via a BNC connector. Do you have any test equipment like a VHF power meter, dummy load, etc.? Without some test equipment, it’s going to be a bit hard to tell what is going on.

In the manual, found at:

on page 9, there is the following graphic:

IMG_2249.jpeg
On the display, while the radio is set to a channel that is receiving, what frequency is displayed as well as what other icons are lit? Be very specific on everything you see and/or post a picture of the display while receiving a signal and transmitting.

Finally, can you ask the seller to help you with the HT? If not, do you belong to a local ham club where the members could help you out? They might say, if the HT is definitely not transmitting to buy a cheap Chinese radio (CCR) like a Baofeng. I would prefer that you didn’t because CCRs are just that; cheap in every which way. You would be much better off with an HT from a major ham radio manufacturer like ICOM, Kenwood, or Yaesu. The Yaesu FT-4XR is on sale for $90 at DX Engineering and possibly at other ham radio stores.

So take your time in responding with as much detail to my questions and thoughts as you can do. The more information that you provide, the more that any of us can help you.

The original owner passed away. It seems to pick up repeaters around me which is what I need. I have a scanner that picks up ham freqs but nothing from my ham. Red light comes on with putt, so I’m guessing I just need to adjust something.

If you have a scanner, you can use it to see if the AT-201 is transmitting a signal.

Put them both on the same frequency (eg 146.52). Then from across the room, tap the PTT button on the 201.. If it's transmitting you'll hear the signal on your scanner.

Hi Bob @just1bob,

You are going to have to answer my questions above if we are to give you much assistance. Also, since your HT is only 20 channels (optionally 40 channels), please list ALL channels as displayed on your HT’s display. Thanks in advance!
