Thirty years ago Andy Overly would have never imagined seeing the state-of-the-art LifeFlight base that sits in Milan.
In the 1970s and '80s Overly, of Huron, used his personal helicopter to aid local law enforcement with missing person searches, manhunts and trips to the islands to rescue the injured.
On Friday the North Central EMS station in Milan unveiled a new helicopter facility that will make saving lives in Erie County a little easier.
The helicopter base at 12513 U.S. 250 is scheduled to start operation in late January or early February, said Sarah Bednarski, spokeswoman for Mercy Health Partners.
"It's a great asset to the community," Overly said. "In this business seconds count, and minutes kill."
Plans for the project began in May when the area behind the North Central EMS facility was nothing but a soybean field.
"We were standing in a field, on dirt, not too long ago," said Ed Oley, chief operating officer of Community Health Partners Regional Medical Center.
The helicopter hangar also has room for numerous EMS ambulances, and a separate facility will house personnel while they work overnight shifts.
The facility in Milan was the brainchild of a committee of area hospital leaders, including Fisher-Titus Medical Center, The Bellevue Hospital, Magruder Hospital, Firelands Regional Medical Center and Fremont Memorial Hospital.
"We thought it would be important to make mobile care ... such as LifeFlight available to our area," said Pat Martin, CEO of North Central EMS and president of Fisher-Titus Medical Center.
The new facility expands LifeFlight services to Erie County communities and the islands. This is the fifth such site in Northwest Ohio and southeastern Michigan.
In 2006, LifeFlight services made 2,679 flights for a 35-county area.
