MILAN

Thirty years ago Andy Overly would have never imagined seeing the state-of-the-art LifeFlight base that sits in Milan.

In the 1970s and '80s Overly, of Huron, used his personal helicopter to aid local law enforcement with missing person searches, manhunts and trips to the islands to rescue the injured.

On Friday the North Central EMS station in Milan unveiled a new helicopter facility that will make saving lives in Erie County a little easier.

The helicopter base at 12513 U.S. 250 is scheduled to start operation in late January or early February, said Sarah Bednarski, spokeswoman for Mercy Health Partners.

"It's a great asset to the community," Overly said. "In this business seconds count, and minutes kill."

Plans for the project began in May when the area behind the North Central EMS facility was nothing but a soybean field.

"We were standing in a field, on dirt, not too long ago," said Ed Oley, chief operating officer of Community Health Partners Regional Medical Center.

The helicopter hangar also has room for numerous EMS ambulances, and a separate facility will house personnel while they work overnight shifts.

The facility in Milan was the brainchild of a committee of area hospital leaders, including Fisher-Titus Medical Center, The Bellevue Hospital, Magruder Hospital, Firelands Regional Medical Center and Fremont Memorial Hospital.

"We thought it would be important to make mobile care ... such as LifeFlight available to our area," said Pat Martin, CEO of North Central EMS and president of Fisher-Titus Medical Center.

The new facility expands LifeFlight services to Erie County communities and the islands. This is the fifth such site in Northwest Ohio and southeastern Michigan.

In 2006, LifeFlight services made 2,679 flights for a 35-county area.

North Central air ambulance coming soon to Milan
| Saturday January 05 2008, 12:12am

MILAN - North Central EMS held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday morning for the Life Flight air ambulance about to be housed at its headquarters.

The helicopter, expected to cost St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center $4.5 million, will be in place starting at the end of this month. Ground-breaking on the hangar behind the North Central headquarters started in early October.

Three other area Life Flight bases are at the Sandusky County Regional Airport in Clyde, the Fulton County Airport in Wauseon and the Bluffton Airport. The headquarters are in Toledo.

Life Flight Medical Director Dr. Chris Goliver said all the bases are strategically located so patients needing advanced care will receive it quickly.

"While the distance (from Fremont) is not much further, those are critical minutes in getting a trauma patient to a trauma center like St. Vincent, where the care they need is available," Goliver said in a prepared statement.

The primary service area for the Milan base is the eastern portion of Northwest Ohio, including Norwalk, Sandusky, Lorain, Oberlin, Vermilion, the Lake Erie islands and surrounding communities.

With the Milan-based helicopter, patients will be able to reach a level-one trauma center within 30 minutes an improvement in response time, North Central Operations Manager Rick Shields said in October.

Pat Martin, the president of Fisher-Titus Medical Center, values a more rapid response time.

"The partnership between Life Flight, our hospitals and EMS agencies will enhance the delivery of life-saving care to our community members," said Martin, who also is the CEO of North Central.

Area hospitals and first responder agencies had requested an additional helicopter based near Sandusky.

The three-person Life Flight crew for Milan will be housed in a separate, already existing building beside the hangar. The pilot, nurse and paramedic are St. Vincent employees who will work rotating shifts.

North Central uses Life Flight about 100 times each year.

I don't think NW Ohio's is called METRO LIFEFLIGHT, so they probably match ProMedica's colors?

Metro Life Flight's Sikorsky S-76s ARE up to code. They were just refurbished with new avionics, interiors, and paint jobs a few years ago. Although, according to one of the pilots at Metro, that doesn't qualify as a refurb. Whatever.

So the helos are 25 years old. If they are still airworthy, why replace them? On top of that, they are replacing the S-76s with EC-145s. That would cut half of thier pilots as an EC145 only needs 1 pilot instead of the 2 they use on an S-76.
